Mathylde Frontus (born December 1,1977) is an American politician. A Democrat,Frontus represented the 46th district in the New York State Assembly. Her district includes portions of southern Brooklyn,including Coney Island,Brighton Beach,Bay Ridge,and Dyker Heights.
As of 2023,Frontus remains the only person since Adele Cohen,who retired in 2006,to have represented the 46th State Assembly District and not have faced criminal charges.
Born December 1,1977 in Brooklyn,Frontus is the daughter of Haitian immigrants. [1] [2] Frontus is a graduate of New York University,Teachers College,Columbia University,and Harvard Divinity School. [3]
Prior to holding elected office,Frontus was well known as a community organizer in southwestern Brooklyn,and notably founded the Urban Neighborhood Services. [4] She received the Characters Unite Award from NBCUniversal for her work in 2014. [5]
In 2018,Assembly member Pamela Harris resigned her seat after allegations of fraud led to an 11-count indictment. [6] Soon afterward,Frontus announced her candidacy for the open seat,and then won the Democratic primary election over Ethan Lustig-Elgrably by only 51 votes. [7] In the general election,Frontus defeated Republican Steven Saperstein with 56% of the vote. [8]
In March 2020,Frontus fired a member of her staff,Marilyn Franks,a receptionist in Frontus’Coney Island district office,after Franks shared a message on Facebook that urged patrons to avoid Chinese restaurants and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. [9] [10] Frontus was reelected in the November 2020 election. [2] In November 2022,Frontus lost reelection to Alec Brook-Krasny by 806 votes. [11]

He resigned on July 7,2015. Brook-Krasny was arrested on charges of felony healthcare fraud in 2017,but was not convicted.

She appointed Brian Benjamin to the position of lieutenant governor and planned to run alongside him until he too resigned in April 2022. Congressman Antonio Delgado was appointed to replace Benjamin as lieutenant governor. Hochul defeated Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi in the Democratic primary for governor,while Delgado defeated Ana Maria Archila and Diana Reyna in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.
The 2021 New York City Council elections were held on November 2,2021. The primary elections were held on June 22,2021. There were several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021;these special elections were the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019 and the second to use ranked-choice voting since New York City repealed PR-STV in 1945. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census,candidates also ran for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time,stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. Four-year terms will resume in the 2025 election after another two-year election in 2023.

James defeated Henry by a margin of 9.2%,a massive underperformance from her 27.2% victory in 2018.

In the primary,voters may vote for any candidate,regardless of their party affiliation. The top two finishers —regardless of party —advanced to the general election in November,even if a candidate managed to receive a majority of the votes cast in the primary election. Incumbent Democratic Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara won re-election to a second term.
