Matthew Stuart Garnaut (born 7 November 1973) is a former Australian sportsman who played Australian rules football for the East Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and cricket for Western Australia.
From Perth,a number of Garnaut's family had previously played top-level sports:his grandfather,Laurie (East Perth),father,John (East Perth),and brother,Graeme (East Perth,Peel Thunder and Subiaco) all played WAFL senior football,and his sister,Kristin,played netball for the Perth Orioles. [1] Garnaut played Teal Cup football for Western Australia,and later played one senior match for East Perth in the WAFL in 1994. [2] He later concentrated on cricket,making his first-class debut against South Australia in November 1996. [3] Overall,he played 16 matches for Western Australia in the 1996–97 and 1997–98 Sheffield Shield competitions,taking 37 wickets at an average of 42.00,with a best of 4/51. [4] Garnaut also played grade cricket for the Bayswater-Morley District Cricket Club. He was involved in a notable incident during the 1998–99 WACA First Grade final against Midland-Guildford,when he and Bret Mulder,batting tenth and eleventh respectively,put on 177 for the tenth wicket to win the tournament for Bayswater-Morley,with Garnaut finishing on 127 not out. He is known as "the Duke" or "Snake" because of his unusual running style,and also the "golf ball" in reference to his surname.
Western Australian Premier Cricket is a club cricket cricket competition played at a level below the first-class Western Warriors and other state teams. The competition is administered by the Western Australian Cricket Association. It is the premier club cricket competition in Western Australia and players vying for Western Warriors and national team selection are typically chosen from Premier Cricket competition clubs. Retiring international and first-class players wishing to continue playing will generally return to their original Premier Cricket club. There are currently 16 teams in the competition.
Allan Melvyn "Mel" Whinnen MBE is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1960 to 1977. Whinnen played 367 premiership games for West Perth,a WAFL record,playing in four premiership sides and finishing runner-up in the Sandover Medal on two occasions,as well as winning West Perth's best and fairest award,the Breckler Medal,on a record nine occasions.
Paul Allen Nicholls was an Australian sportsman who played for Western Australia in first-class cricket during the 1970s and played Australian rules football with the East Fremantle Football Club.
Zachary Beeck is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the East Perth and Peel Thunder Football Clubs in the West Australian Football League (WAFL),as well as one match for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is known more for his Cricketing Career than his AFL career. He travelled around England in the early stages of life with a young Australian team and averaged 90 in his batting career as a number 3. Stephen Coniglio is a professional Australian rules footballer for the Greater Western Sydney Giants in the Australian Football League (AFL). Drafted with the second pick in the 2011 AFL national draft,Coniglio made his debut for Greater Western Sydney in the first round of the 2012 season and was later nominated for the 2012 AFL Rising Star award. Mark Raymond Hutchings is an Australian rules footballer who last played for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL) and currently plays for West Perth Football Club. From Perth,Western Australia,Hutchings captained his state at the 2009 National Under-18 Championships,and,having also played for East Perth in the West Australian Football League (WAFL),was selected by St Kilda in the 2010 Rookie Draft. A midfielder,he was delisted after a season at the club without having made his senior debut,and transferred to West Perth upon his return to Western Australia. Establishing himself as a regular player for the team,Hutchings was one of the competition's best players during the 2012 season,playing state football,finishing second in the Sandover Medal,and winning West Perth's best and fairest award. He was drafted by West Coast at the 2012 National Draft,and made his senior AFL debut during the 2013 season,playing nine matches during his debut season,as well as playing in a premiership for West Perth.
Craig Edwards is a former Australian rules footballer who played for East Perth and South Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Edwards won the 1989 Sandover Medal as the best player in the competition and was named as one of the top 25 WAFL players of the 25 years from 1987 to 2012.
