Matt Lovell is an Australian audio engineer, record producer and mixer. He has won three ARIA Music Awards for Engineer of the Year: in 2005 for his work on The Mess Hall's' Notes from a Ceiling , in 2006 for Black Fingernails, Red Wine by Eskimo Joe, and in 2008 for his work on Shihad's Beautiful Machine . Lovell was the CEO and co-owner of Lovell's Lager, a brewery.

Biography

Matt Lovell worked as an assistant audio engineer on silverchair's debut album, Frogstomp , from December 1994, which was released in March of the following year. [1] [2] He has produced work for Something for Kate, The Mess Hall, Tom Morgan and Shihad. As well as producing, he has also worked with Ammonia, Midnight Oil, Eskimo Joe, Grinspoon, Silverchair, [1] the Whitlams, INXS, Spiderbait, the Presets, One Dollar Short, the Sleepy Jackson, and Cold Chisel. Lovell has received three ARIA Music Awards for Engineer of the Year: in 2005 for his work on The Mess Hall's' Notes from a Ceiling , in 2006 for Black Fingernails, Red Wine by Eskimo Joe, and in 2008 for his work on Shihad's Beautiful Machine . [5] [6] In 2011 he was nominated for Engineer of the Year for his work on Eskimo Joe's Ghosts of the Past . [6] He has worked with other record producers: Andrew Farriss, Tony Cohen, Kevin Shirley and Nick Launay. [7]

In 2006 Lovell was appointed as a mentor in the Qantas 'Spirit of Youth Awards'. [8] Lovell has mixed Jed Kurzel's soundtrack for the 2011 feature film, Snowtown . [9]

Outside of his music career, Lowell was the founder and CEO of Lowell's Lager a beer brewery based in Sydney since 2005. [10] [11] [12] Roger Grierson (of the Thought Criminals) recommended it, "It's on tap at the Annandale. Excellent. If you're at the Annandale, buy some." [12] Back of the Ferry's website reviewer described the beer "there is something just not right with this beer (to my taste). The first swallow is inoffensive, but there is an aftertaste that is reminiscent of stale beer lines that I couldn’t get over. It really was a struggle to get the last drop down." [11] Chris Joannou of Silverchair became his partner in the brewery, [13] [14] but by February 2014 the business was "currently on hold." [15] Lovell now co-owns and operates a Korean Fried Chicken restaurant, in Newcastle, Australia. [16] The restaurant, named Wu-cha, is owned by Paula Birch, Lovell and Harry Callinan. According to Lovell “It’s all about the really punchy flavours and bright colours” with the chicken being cooked fresh and the sauces made from scratch. [17]

The Mess Hall were a two-piece drums and guitar combo based in Sydney, Australia, specialising in "raw, edgy bluesy rock." The band consisted of Jed Kurzel and Cec Condon for most of its tenure. The band was often praised for its live shows: "When plugged in and turned up," wrote The Sydney Morning Herald, "the duo produce enough energy to power a house full of floodlights." The band released four studio albums before amicably parting in 2011. They reunited for a series of shows in 2015.

Notes from a Ceiling is the second album from the Australian two-piece rock band The Mess Hall, which was issued on 20 June 2005. It peaked at No. 8 on the ARIA Hitseekers Albums Chart. It won an ARIA Music Award for Engineer of the Year for Matt Lovell, and a nomination for Producer of the Year for Chris Joannou and the group. It was short-listed for the inaugural Australian Music Prize and was included in both Triple J and Rolling Stone's Top 50 of 2005.

Feeling Sideways is a six-track extended play by Australian indie rock duo, the Mess Hall, released in May 2003. It was co-produced by band members, Anthony Johnsen and Jed Kurzel with Chris Joannou and Matt Lovell for Cayman Island Mafia/Shock Records. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2003 it was nominated for Best Independent Release. They followed with an Australian tour schedule, "both in support and headlining position."

The Ninth Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards was held on 20 October 1995 at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre. There had been a 18-month gap since the previous award ceremony which was moved to be "closer to the business end of the music industry's year" and so reflect that year's works. Presenters distributed 28 awards from 1060 eligible submissions. Big winners for the year were Silverchair with five awards and Tina Arena with four, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year – both first time they were won by a female.

The ARIA Music Award for Engineer of the Year, is an award presented within the Artisan Awards at the annual ARIA Music Awards. The ARIA Awards recognise "the many achievements of Australian artists across all music genres", and have been given by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) since 1987.
