Matt Merkens is an American football coach who is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Sam Houston State Bearkats football team.

Playing career

Merkens grew up in Marble Falls, Texas and attended Marble Falls High School. [1] After high school, he enrolled at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and joined the Bearkats football team as a walk-on. [2] Merkens was a backup quarterback for the Bearkats for three seasons. [3]

Coaching career

Merkens began his coaching career as a student coaching intern at Sam Houston State for his final two seasons at the school. After graduating in 2015, he was hired as a graduate assistant at Western Colorado. [3] Merkens returned to Sam Houston State as an offensive assistant after one season and worked primarily with wide receivers before being promoted to an offensive quality control position in 2018. He was promoted to tight ends coach prior to the start of the 2020–21 NCAA Division I FCS football season. [4] During the 2022 season, Merkens was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach following the demotion of coordinator John Perry. [5] He was moved back to coaching tight ends after SHSU hired Brad Cornelsen as offensive coordinator.

Personal life

Merkens' father, Guido Merkens, played quarterback at Sam Houston State and in the National Football League. [2]

Robert Michael Bobo is an American college football coach who is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Georgia, his alma mater. He was the head coach at Colorado State from 2015 to 2019. Bobo is known for his pro-style type offensive schemes which cater to the ability to control clock and create long methodical drives. He has recently come under criticism for lackluster offenses and the inability to game prep or adjust in the face of competent opponents. One chief criticism is for running predictable play calls, valuing execution over ingenuity. Football teams and players have historically regressed under Bobo’s tutelage.

Philip Todd Whitten is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at Tarleton State University, a position he held in 1996, from 2000 to 2004, and resumed before the 2016 season. Whitten was head football coach at Sam Houston State University from 2005 to 2009.

The Sam Houston Bearkats are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Sam Houston State University, located in Huntsville, Texas. Sam Houston's colors are orange and white. Sam Houston sports teams participate in NCAA Division I in Conference USA (CUSA), having joined that conference on July 1, 2023 after spending 34 years in the Southland Conference and two years in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Brad Cornelsen is a former American football coach and player who is currently the offensive coordinator at Sam Houston State University. He was the former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Virginia Tech from 2016 to 2021.
