Matthew Acosta (born November 14, 2002) is an American soccer player who plays as a midfielder for North Carolina Tar Heels.

Raised in the Annandale section of Clinton Township, New Jersey, Acosta played prep soccer at North Hunterdon High School. [1]

Early career

Acosta began his career in the youth academy of the New York Red Bulls in 2013. [2] In March 2021, Acosta was included in the pre-season roster of Red Bulls reserve side New York Red Bulls II. [3] Raised in the Annandale section of Clinton Township, New Jersey, Acosta announced in April 2021 that he would commit to playing college soccer for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights for the 2021 season. [4]

On April 30, 2021, Acosta made his senior debut for Red Bulls II in the USL Championship against Hartford Athletic, starting in the 2–3 defeat. [5]

College career

In the fall of 2021, Acosta went to play college soccer at Rutgers University. [6]

During his freshman season, he played in and started all 17 games. He was a unanimous All Big Ten selection.

During his sophomore season, he was a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. He started all 21 games and the led the team with 1,742 minutes played.

In his junior year, he was named to the All Big Ten Second Team. He was the only student-athlete to start all 16 games of the season and had 1,436 minutes on the pitch. [7]
