Matthew Phillips is a British paraclimber. He competes on the Great Britain Paraclimbing Team, where he was the youngest member, [1] and is the current World Champion in the AU2 [2] (Upper Arm Amputation) category. [3] He is coached by GB Team's Head Coach Robin O'Leary. [4]
Phillips was born missing his right lower arm from the elbow down. He started out as a national swimmer, but switched to climbing when he was around 13. [5] He attended Salesian College in Farnborough. [6] He started climbing seriously in 2014. [7] In 2016 he was featured in the Channel 4's Paralympics trailer 'We're the Superhumans'. [7] in 2018 he won the Young Sports Personality of the Year in the Sport Guildford Awards. [8]
He left school in 2019 and spent time in Boulder, Colorado climbing with his coach Robin O'Leary and a number of US climbers. Whilst out there he was joined by film maker David Petts of Volo Digital to film footage for the film 'One of Kind [9] ' which is available on Epic TV YouTube channel. Phillips returned to the United Kingdom where he now works as a Climbing Instructor at Surrey Summit, alongside competing. [10]
Phillips has competed in a number of national and international competitions. In 2016 he won the Paraclimbing Cup in June in Italy, [6] and in September in Sheffield. [18] In 2017 he finished second at the Cup in Edinburgh and first at the Cup in Sheffield. [19] In 2018 he won both the Cup in Briançon [20] and the World Championships in Innsbruck. [21]
In the ParaClimb Scotland 2019 Competition Phillips took gold in what is thought to have been the first Para-Speed Climbing event, on an international approved speed wall, in the United Kingdom with a time of 25.36s. Although his personal best came on the first qualifying route at 23.11s. [22]
In 2019 he successfully defended his world title by winning a gold medal at the World Paraclimbing Championships in Briançon in France. [23] He became Three times World Paraclimbing Champion in 2021 when he won Gold in Moscow [24]
Speed climbing is a climbing discipline in which speed is the ultimate goal. Speed climbing is done on rocks, walls and poles and is only recommended for highly skilled and experienced climbers.
The IFSC Climbing World Championships are the biennial world championship event for competition climbing that is organized by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC). This event determines the male and female world champions in the three disciplines of sport climbing: lead climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing. Since 2012, a Combined ranking is also determined, for climbers competing in all disciplines, and additional medals are awarded based on that ranking. The first event was organized in Frankfurt in 1991.

Shauna Coxsey is an English professional rock climber. She is the most successful competition climber in the UK, having won the IFSC Bouldering World Cup Season in both 2016 and 2017. She retired from competition climbing after competing in the 2020 Olympics.

The Great Britain paraclimbing team represents Great Britain in paraclimbing. They are administered by British Mountaineering Council, and currently sponsored by the Oakwood Climbing Centre and Quay Climbing Centre. Laura Rogora is an Italian sport climber. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Women's combined sport climbing. In 2015, she became the second youngest climber, at age 14, to complete a 9a (5.14d) route. In 2019, Rogora qualified to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, finished 2nd in lead at the IFSC Climbing European Championships and won 3 of 4 possible gold medals at the IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships, coming first in lead, boulder and combined categories in the Junior age group.
The 2020 IFSC Climbing World Cup was the 32nd edition of the World Cup held by the International Federation of Sport Climbing. It was scheduled to be held in 12 locations across three climbing disciplines, bouldering, lead and speed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic concerns, only one event was held, the Lead World Cup at Briançon in August, while all other World Cups were canceled.
The 2021 IFSC Climbing World Cup was the 33rd edition of the international sport climbing competition series, held in seven locations. There are 11 events: four bouldering, five lead, and two speed events. The season began on 16 April in Meiringen, Switzerland with the first bouldering competition in the season, and concluded on 4 September in Kranj, Slovenia. The International Federation of Sport Climbing had initially scheduled 18 events concluding on 31 October, but COVID-19 travel restrictions resulted in the cancellation of events in Xiamen and Wujiang in China, Jakarta in Indonesia and Seoul in South Korea.
Lead climbing competitions at the 2019 IFSC Climbing World Cup were held at six locations, from 4 July to 27 October 2019. The top three in each competition received medals, and at the end of the season, the overall winners were awarded trophies. The overall winners were determined based upon points, which athletes were awarded for finishing in the top 30 of each individual event. Adam Ondra won the men's seasonal title, Chaehyun Seo won the women's seasonal title, and Japan won the national team title.

Maureen Beck is an American mountaineer, and a specialist in adaptive climbing. Born without a lower left arm, she has won six national titles, and won a gold medal at the 2014 Spanish Paraclimbing World Championships.
