Matthews is a 2017 documentary film directed by Ryan Scott Warren, produced by Joe Pierce, and written by J. David Everhart. [2] It is about the life and legacy of British footballer Sir Stanley Matthews. [3]
Matthews tells the true story of the life and career of Sir Stanley Matthews considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time. It documents his early years to his football career playing for Stoke City, Blackpool, and England, playing in the 1950 FIFA World Cup and 1954 FIFA World Cup, to his retired years as a coach for an all-black team in Soweto known as "Stan's Men". [4] The film includes interviews from Sir Richard Branson, Sir Michael Parkinson, Gary Lineker, and Stanley Matthews's son Stanley Jr. [5]
The premiere of Matthews was held at the Stoke Film Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent on 18 October 2017 and it was released digitally on 23 October 2017. [6] [7]
Colin Lomas of Vulture Hound calls Matthews "an excellent portrait of a very humble man" [3] and UK magazine Radio Times has given the film a 3/5 star review. [8]

Henry Gregg,, was a Northern Irish professional footballer and manager. A goalkeeper, he played for Manchester United during the reign of Sir Matt Busby, with a total of 247 appearances for the club. He was a survivor of the Munich air disaster in 1958. Gregg also played for Doncaster Rovers and Stoke City, as well as making 25 appearances for the Northern Ireland national team between 1954 and 1963, including at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Stoke City Football Club has its origins in Stoke Ramblers. A team formed by former pupils of the Charterhouse School whilst they were apprentices at the North Staffordshire Railway. The club dropped the Ramblers from their name, becoming Stoke Football club and in 1888 they were founding members of the Football League.
