Matthews is a 2017 documentary film directed by Ryan Scott Warren, produced by Joe Pierce, and written by J. David Everhart. [2] It is about the life and legacy of British footballer Sir Stanley Matthews. [3]

Synopsis

Matthews tells the true story of the life and career of Sir Stanley Matthews considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time. It documents his early years to his football career playing for Stoke City, Blackpool, and England, playing in the 1950 FIFA World Cup and 1954 FIFA World Cup, to his retired years as a coach for an all-black team in Soweto known as "Stan's Men". [4] The film includes interviews from Sir Richard Branson, Sir Michael Parkinson, Gary Lineker, and Stanley Matthews's son Stanley Jr. [5]

Release

The premiere of Matthews was held at the Stoke Film Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent on 18 October 2017 and it was released digitally on 23 October 2017. [6] [7]

Reception

Colin Lomas of Vulture Hound calls Matthews "an excellent portrait of a very humble man" [3] and UK magazine Radio Times has given the film a 3/5 star review. [8]

Victoria Ground

The Victoria Ground was the home ground of Stoke City from 1878 until 1997, when the club relocated to the Britannia Stadium after 119 years. At the time of its demolition it was the oldest operational ground in the Football League.

Stanley Tucci Jr. is an American actor and filmmaker. The Bet365 Stadium is an all-seater football stadium in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England and the home of EFL Championship club Stoke City. The stadium was previously called the Britannia Stadium but was renamed on 1 June 2016 when the club entered into a new stadium-naming-rights agreement with its parent company, Bet365. It has a capacity of 30,089 following the completion of expansion works in 2017.

Kazuyoshi Miura, often known simply as Kazu, is a Japanese professional footballer who plays as a forward for Japan Football League club Suzuka Point Getters on loan from Yokohama FC.

Henry Gregg,, was a Northern Irish professional footballer and manager. A goalkeeper, he played for Manchester United during the reign of Sir Matt Busby, with a total of 247 appearances for the club. He was a survivor of the Munich air disaster in 1958. Gregg also played for Doncaster Rovers and Stoke City, as well as making 25 appearances for the Northern Ireland national team between 1954 and 1963, including at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He later went into management with Carlisle United, Crewe Alexandra, Shrewsbury Town and Swansea City.

Stoke City Football Club has its origins in Stoke Ramblers. A team formed by former pupils of the Charterhouse School whilst they were apprentices at the North Staffordshire Railway. The club dropped the Ramblers from their name, becoming Stoke Football club and in 1888 they were founding members of the Football League.
