Matthew "Matty" Newton (born 3 January 1984) is an Australian songwriter, bass player, guitarist, keyboardist and producer from Queensland, Australia. [1]

Biography

Matty Newton got his start in the Australian music scene as bass player for Brisbane indie rock band Repeat Offender [2] from 2003 through 2009. In 2008 Newton and Erinn Swan formed the band Streamer Bendy. [3] He has also spent time performing as a guitarist with rock bands Trial Kennedy, Tourism and Nina May. Newton has worked closely with a lot of bands in Australia, notably as touring guitar technician for bands The Butterfly Effect, Trial Kennedy and Tourism, occasionally joining the latter on guitar. [4] Newton spent three years as the bass player for the Tribute Theatre Company, Showtime [5] where he toured the world for several years. In 2010 Newton was approached by The Veronicas to play bass and contribute to songwriting for their third album, and subsequently spent several months living in Los Angeles with the band before parting ways to continue work on the never-released Streamer Bendy project in Stockholm, Sweden.

In 2012 Newton's solo project, The Rebound Girl, was shortlisted for "Best Urban Release" in the QLD Music Awards.

Repeat Offender

As a founding member, Newton played bass, wrote the songs and managed Australian band Repeat Offender [6] who released several albums and toured with bands such as The Veronicas, The Butterfly Effect, and Panic! at the Disco and played festivals such as Taste of Chaos and Big Day Out. Repeat Offender released their first EP, To a Modern Love..., in May 2006 independently and debuted at number 23 in the Australian singles charts. Repeat Offender toured heavily and performed over 600 shows [7] between 2003 and 2009. [8]

Streamer Bendy

Streamer Bendy were a Brisbane band that recorded their self-titled debut album between Stockholm, Los Angeles, Brisbane and Sydney. Newton formed the band in 2008 with Erinn Swan, [9] formerly of Nina May. [10] Initially the bass player for the group, Newton has also toured as their drummer, guitarist and keyboardist after several line-up changes. Along with Swan, Newton was a primary songwriter for the group.

Queen, it's a Kind of Magic

Queen, it's a Kind of Magic was the world's largest and most successful Queen tribute act. As a touring member of this group from 2009 to 2010 Newton performed hundreds of shows in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore. He also performed as a bass player for other shows produced by Showtime Entertainment during this time, including an ABBA show and a Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus production.

The Hangout

The Hangout are a Brisbane band that formed in 2013 and released two singles, "Amsterdam" and "Those Girls" later that year. Newton was a primary songwriter and performer for the band. [11]

Tourism

Tourism are an indie-rock back from Brisbane, Australia. Fronted by British ex-pat Jozef Wisniewski, they toured heavily around Australia from 2010 to 2014, releasing several singles including "City Never Sleeps" (produced by Steven Schram), "Run" (produced by Lewis Stephenson - Jungle Giants/The Belligerents), and "Supermodel" (Sean Cook - Yves Klein Blue/Big Scary). The band received generous airplay across Australia.

Jared Porter

In 2015, Newton joined 2014 Toyota StarMaker winner Jared Porter for several key country music shows: CMC Rocks Festival, Country Summer (Sonoma County CA), and Music In The Mulga. Newton fulfills multiple roles for Porter: organ, keys, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and synthesizer.

Regurgitator are an Australian alternative rock band from Brisbane, Queensland, formed in late 1993 by Quan Yeomans on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards; Ben Ely on bass guitar, keyboards and vocals; and Martin Lee on drums. Their debut studio album, Tu-Plang was released in May 1996; it was followed by Unit in November 1997 which was certified triple platinum. The Butterfly Effect are an Australian rock band from Brisbane formed in 1999. The band released a self-titled debut EP in 2001, and then three full-length albums afterwards; Begins Here in 2003, Imago in 2006, and Final Conversation of Kings in 2008. During this time, the band consisted of Clint Boge on lead vocals, Kurt Goedhart on guitar, Glenn Esmond on bass, and Ben Hall on drums. After struggling for years to work on a fourth studio album, Boge left the band in 2012 due to personal and creative differences. The remaining members recruited Brisbane-based singer Paul Galagher for a final single and tour before announcing their breakup in 2016. In July 2017, the band announced their reunion as well as a headlining tour scheduled to take place in March 2018. In 2022, the band released their fourth studio album, IV.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Magic Dirt</span> Australian rock band

Magic Dirt is an Australian rock band, which formed in 1991 in Geelong, Victoria, with Daniel Herring on guitar, Adam Robertson on drums, Adalita Srsen on vocals and guitar, and Dean Turner on bass guitar. Initially forming an alternative underground band called Deer Bubbles which split and formed into the much heavier, rock based group called The Jim Jims, they were renamed as Magic Dirt. Ratcat are an Australian indie rock band from Sydney who formed in 1985. The band is fronted by mainstay vocalist and guitarist, Simon Day. Their combination of indie pop song writing and energetic punk-style guitar rock won them fans from both the indie and skate-punk communities. They found mainstream success with their extended play, Tingles, album Blind Love and the single, "Don't Go Now" (April), which all reached No. 1 on the ARIA Charts during 1991. The band released two subsequent albums that did not match their earlier chart success. Ratcat ceased performing live regularly in the late 1990s; however, they continue to perform sporadically. Laughing Clowns, sometimes written as The Laughing Clowns, were a post-punk band formed in Sydney in 1979. In five years, the band released three LPs, three EPs, and various singles and compilations. Laughing Clowns' sound is free jazz, bluegrass and krautrock influenced. The band formed to accommodate Ed Kuepper's growing interest in expanding brass-driven elements he had brought to The Saints' third album, Prehistoric Sounds, and by adopting flattened fifth notes in a rock and roll setting while using a modern jazz styled band line-up.

Erinn Swan is an Australian singer and songwriter from Brisbane. She is also an A&R Representative for Sony Music Australia and Head of Digital for the Australian Labor Party.

The band formed in 2006 and has since released an EP and three full-length albums, the latest of which, Titan was released on 11 October 2019. They have undertaken national and international tours in support of their albums and have also supported international acts including Cradle of Filth, Amon Amarth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Malevolent Creation, Despised Icon, Sybreed, At The Gates, Fear Factory, Children of Bodom, Hypocrisy and Kataklysm.

Sianvar was an American progressive rock band from Sacramento, California, formed in 2013. The group currently consists of lead vocalist Donovan Melero, guitarists Will Swan and Sergio Medina, and drummer Joseph Arrington. The band is signed to Swan's independent record label Blue Swan Records. They released their debut self-titled EP on January 5, 2014 and their debut full-length studio album, Stay Lost, in August 2016. The band announced an indefinite hiatus on April 8, 2019.

The band was co-founded by drummer Tom Bloomfield and lead vocalist Marie "Maz" DeVita, who oversaw every iteration of the line-up until 2023.
