Maud's Bridge was a small railway station built by the South Yorkshire Railway on its line between Thorne and Keadby. The station was situated between Thorne and Medge Hall.

History

The South Yorkshire Railway (SYR) had a small system connecting Sheffield with Doncaster and some neighbouring towns; [1] in 1855 it reached Thorne. [2] An eastwards extension from Thorne to Keadby, parallel to the Keadby Canal (which was owned by the SYR), was commenced in December 1858, and opened on 10 September 1859. [3] Originally there was only one intermediate station, at Crowle, but others were soon opened, [3] including one at Maud's Bridge in October 1859. [4]

Only a couple of miles to the east the line crosses the county boundary, leaving Yorkshire and entering Lincolnshire. It was at Maud's Bridge that the new 'straightened' track from Thorne South, opened in 1864, rejoined the original route along the canal. The station closed to passengers on 1 October 1866; [4] in the meantime, the SYR had been leased to the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in June 1864. [5]

Stainforth and Keadby Canal Canal in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, England

The Stainforth and Keadby Canal is a navigable canal in South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, England. It connects the River Don Navigation at Bramwith to the River Trent at Keadby, by way of Stainforth, Thorne and Ealand, near Crowle. It opened in 1802, passed into the control of the River Don Navigation in 1849, and within a year was controlled by the first of several railway companies. It became part of the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation, an attempt to remove several canals from railway control, in 1895. There were plans to upgrade it to take larger barges and to improve the port facilities at Keadby, but the completion of the New Junction Canal in 1905 made this unnecessary, as Goole could easily be reached and was already a thriving port.

West Riding and Grimsby Railway

The West Riding and Grimsby Railway was a railway company that promoted a line between Wakefield and Doncaster, in Yorkshire, England. There was also a branch line connection from Adwick le Street to Stainforth, which gave access towards Grimsby. The company was promoted independently, but it was sponsored by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and the Great Northern Railway, and became jointly owned by them.

Barnsley Coal Railway

The Barnsley Coal Railway was a short railway which, when fully opened, ran between Stairfoot Junction, on the Mexborough to Barnsley line of the South Yorkshire Railway (SYR) and a triangular junction at Nostell on the line of the West Riding and Grimsby Railway (WR&GR).

The original Keadby railway station was the easternmost terminus of the South Yorkshire Railway. The railway, which was extended from Thorne and opened in September 1859 was built without an Act of Parliament, as the railway company owned the canal alongside which they built the line.

The Oldham, Ashton and Guide Bridge Junction Railway (OA&GB) was a British railway company, which opened in 1861, connecting Oldham, Ashton and Guide Bridge. The company survived until it was nationalised in 1948.

Thorne Waterside railway station, sometimes referred to as "Thorne Lock" because of its location, was built by the South Yorkshire Railway as the terminus of its line from Doncaster. It was the first railway station to be opened in Thorne. The line was opened for goods traffic on 11 December 1855 and to passenger services on 7 July 1856. The station was built adjacent to the Stainforth to Keadby Canal and goods traffic was trans-shipped for forwarding on.

Thorne (Old) railway station was the second railway station built by the South Yorkshire Railway to serve the town of Thorne, South Yorkshire, England. It was situated near the town centre on the first stage of the canal-side line to Keadby, which was opened in September 1859. The new line left the original South Yorkshire Railway just before arriving at Thorne Waterside taking a right-handed junction towards the town centre. When the line opened this station was the terminus of the line.

South Humberside Main Line

The South Humberside Main Line runs from Doncaster on the East Coast Main Line to Thorne where it diverges from the Sheffield to Hull Line. It then runs eastwards to Scunthorpe and the Humber ports of Immingham and Grimsby, with the coastal resort of Cleethorpes as terminus.

The Hull and Doncaster Branch is a secondary main railway line in England, connecting Kingston upon Hull to South Yorkshire and beyond via a branch from the Selby Line near Gilberdyke to a connection to the Doncaster–Barnetby line at a junction near Thorne 8 miles northeast of Doncaster.

Thornton Curtis railway station was a temporary structure provided by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway until it opened Thornton Abbey station 42 chains (840 m) to the north.
