Maurizio Trombetta is an Italian former football player turned manager. He was head coach of Romanian Liga I clubs CFR Cluj and FCM Târgu Mureș and youth team coach at Reggina.

The 2000–01 season was the 101st season in Società Sportiva Lazio's history and their 13th consecutive season in the top-flight of Italian football. Lazio were unable to defend their Serie A title won in 2000 after finishing third, but won the Supercoppa Italiana.

In the 1998–99 season, Associazione Calcio Milan returned to their previous winning ways under the guidance of new manager Alberto Zaccheroni. Hired from Udinese, Zaccheroni brought striker Oliver Bierhoff and right-wingback Thomas Helveg with him from his former club. He introduced Milan to his unorthodox 3–4–3 formation in which Bierhoff was a perfect centre forward, scoring 20 goals in the league.

U.C. Sampdoria started its march towards an eventual Serie A championship and European Cup final with its appointment of Yugoslav coach Vujadin Boškov. With Britons Graeme Souness and Trevor Francis leaving the squad, Boškov built his team around young Italian players, with Roberto Mancini, Gianluca Vialli, Pietro Vierchowod and Moreno Mannini among the bulwark of the squad as Sampdoria finished 6th in a tight battle involving several teams for 3rd in the championship.
