The Mayor's Cup is a College football rivalry between the Missouri Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks. The rivalry officially began upon Missouri's arrival in the Southeastern Conference in 2012, where they joined South Carolina in the East Division. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier suggested introducing a trophy for the game as the two schools were both located in cities named Columbia. [1] The trophy was introduced the following season in 2013, with South Carolina winning the initial trophy matchup 27-24 in double overtime. The two teams met twice in bowl games before Missouri joined the Southeastern Conference, in the 1979 Hall of Fame Classic and the 2005 Independence Bowl, both won by the Tigers. The Tigers lead the all time series 9-6, but the Gamecocks won the most recent matchup on November 16, 2024 34-30. [2]
