The mayor of Lewisham is a directly elected mayor responsible for the executive function of Lewisham London Borough Council in London. The role was established in 2002 following a referendum the previous year.

Contents

Damien Egan resigned the post on 10 January 2024 in order to contest the 2024 Kingswood by election. [1] In the resulting by-election, Brenda Dacres was elected as Egan's successor. [1] [2]

2024

The by-election was triggered following the resignation of Damien Egan to stand in the 2024 Kingswood by-election. It was the first election run under first past the post rather than the prior use of supplementary vote. The winning candidate, Brenda Dacres, is the first black woman to serve as a directly elected mayor in the UK. The election had a low turnout of 20.73%. [11] [2]

Damien James Egan is a British politician who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingswood in South Gloucestershire since a by-election in 2024. A member of the Labour Party, he was previously Mayor of Lewisham in Greater London from 2018 to 2024.

A by-election was held in the UK Parliament constituency of Lewisham East on 14 June 2018, following the resignation of Labour MP Heidi Alexander. It was the second by-election held during the 57th UK Parliament, which was elected in June 2017.

The 2022 Lewisham London Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022. All 54 members of Lewisham London Borough Council were up for election. The elections took place alongside local elections in the other London boroughs and elections to local authorities across the United Kingdom.

A by-election took place on 15 February 2024 in the UK Parliament constituency of Kingswood in South Gloucestershire. This followed the resignation of Conservative MP Chris Skidmore, in protest at the UK government's decision to issue more oil and gas licences. Skidmore announced his resignation on 5 January and it was effected three days later.

Brenda Vanessa Dacres is a British Labour and Co-operative Party politician who is Mayor of Lewisham. In 2024 she became the first black woman directly elected mayor in England.
