The Mayor of Penang Island (Malay : Datuk Bandar Pulau Pinang) is the chief executive for the local government of George Town, the capital of the State of Penang. The Mayor's responsibilities include the management of the Penang Island City Council's annual budget, which amounted to RM606.53 million as of 2018 [update] . [1]
Between 1957 and 1966, the city of George Town, under the governance of the George Town City Council, was led by three Mayors.

In 1966, the functions of the George Town City Council were taken over by the then Chief Minister of Penang, Wong Pow Nee. [4]
To date, the Penang Island City Council has been headed by four successive mayors.
Patahiyah Ismail served as the first female Mayor of Penang Island from 2015 to 2017, when she was succeeded by Maimunah Mohd Sharif. [5] [6] However, Maimunah's tenure lasted for only a year, following her concurrent appointment as the executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres; Maimunah thus became the first Asian to be elected for the role. Yew Tung Seang was subsequently appointed as the third Mayor of Penang Island. He held the position until 2023, when Rajendran P. Anthony was appointed as his successor. [9]

Butterworth is the largest urban town in the city of Seberang Perai, Penang, Malaysia. It lies about 3 km (1.9 mi) east of George Town, the capital city of Penang, across the Penang Strait. As of 2021, Butterworth has a total population of 107,591 residents.

The Bayan Lepas LRT line is a proposed light rapid transit (LRT) line in the Malaysian state of Penang. Conceived by the Penang state government in the 2000s as part of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP), the proposed 22 km (14 mi) line within the city of George Town was envisioned to link the city centre with the industrial town of Bayan Lepas to the south.
Chris Lee Chun Kit is a Malaysian politician who served as Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Pulau Tikus from May 2018 to August 2023. He also served as Member of the Penang Island City Council from 2013 to April 2018. He is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and formerly Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalitions.
Cycling in Penang Island refers to the use of bicycles in the city of George Town and elsewhere on Penang Island, Malaysia, either for recreational, touring or transportation purposes. While bicycles have long been in use in Penang, with rickshaws becoming a unique application of the pedal-driven vehicle in the state, the usage of bicycles has noticeably declined since the late 20th century due to the proliferation of cars as the main transportation mode.
The 12th Penang election was held on 8 March 2008. Polling took place in 40 constituencies throughout the State of Penang, with each electing a State Assemblyman to the Penang State Legislative Assembly. The election was conducted by the Malaysian Election Commission.
Dato' Seri Paduka Maimunah binti Mohd Sharif is the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). She assumed office in January 2018, becoming the first Asian woman to serve as Executive Director of UN-Habitat. On 20 January 2022, she was re-elected by the UN General Assembly for a two-year term that ends on 19 January 2024.
The Penang Transport Master Plan was drawn up to address the deteriorating traffic conditions in Penang and is projected to cost RM46 billion.
