McKim William Mitchell (born March 31,1954) is a former American politician,who served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1998 to 2004. A member of the Democratic Party,he represented Cheshire County,and served on the House Judiciary and Finance committees.
Openly gay,he served as a cochair of the New Hampshire chapter of the Stonewall Democrats. [2] When the General Court debated legislation in 2004 to ban same-sex marriage in New Hampshire,Mitchell spoke against the legislation by telling about his rejection by his parents and brother,who had not invited him to spend a family holiday with them in over 25 years despite living on the same road. [3]
In the 2004 election,Mitchell ran for a seat in the New Hampshire State Senate,against incumbent Thomas R. Eaton in Senate District 10. [4] He narrowly lost that election,and subsequently opened a sawmill business in Chesterfield. [5]

It was dissolved prior to the election of January 23,2006. The legislation was later challenged by the members of the 39th Canadian Parliament.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in New Hampshire since January 1,2010,based on legislation signed into law by Governor John Lynch on June 3,2009. The law provided that civil unions,which the state had established on January 1,2008,would be converted to marriages on January 1,2011,unless dissolved,annulled,or converted to marriage before that date.

New Hampshire law has also protected against discrimination based on sexual orientation since 1998 and gender identity since 2018. Additionally,a conversion therapy ban on minors became effective in the state in January 2019. Effective from January 1,2024,the archaic common-law "gay panic defence" will formally be abolished - by legislation implemented within August 2023.

The Marriage Equality Act is a 2011 landmark New York State law that made same-sex marriage legal. The bill was introduced in the New York State Assembly by Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell and in the New York State Senate by Senator Thomas Duane. It was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on June 24,2011 and took effect on July 24,2011.
John Steven Vaillancourt was an American politician,who served as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He represented Hillsborough County District 15,the city of Manchester Ward 8. He served from 1996 to 2014 and from 2016 until his death. He served as a member of the Democratic Party,the Libertarian Party,and later the Republican Party. Vaillancourt also served as Manchester alderman for Ward 8 from 1999 to 2001 while serving in the State House of Representatives.
The history of same-sex marriage in Australia includes its express prohibition by the Howard government in 2004 and its eventual legalisation by the Parliament in December 2017. Although a same-sex marriage law was passed by the Australian Capital Territory in 2013,it was struck down by the High Court on the basis of inconsistency with federal law. The Court's decision closed the possibility of concurrent state or territory laws that would allow same-sex marriage where federal law did not.
