Md. Afzal Karim is a Bangladeshi banker and managing director of Sonali Bank Limited. [1] [2] Sonali Bank is the largest state owned bank in Bangladesh. [3] He is the former managing director of Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation. [4] He is the chairperson of the executive committee of Bangladesh Foreign Exchange Dealers' Association. [5] He is a director of Central Depository Bangladesh Limited.

Early life

Karim was born in Mehendiganj Upazila, Barisal District. [6] Karim completed his bachelors in mechanical engineering at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology. [7] He did a diploma from Bangladesh Institute of Management. [7]

Career

Karim joined Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation in 1995 as the Senior Principal Officer. [8] He would go on to become general manager of Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation. [8] He worked at Sena Kallyan Sangstha and Bangladesh Tea Board. [8]

In 2015, Karim was the general manager of operations of the Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation when he joined Bangladesh Krishi Bank as general manager. [9]

From 2018 to 2020, Karim was the deputy managing director of Bangladesh Krishi Bank. [8] In 2020, he disbursed 945 loans from the state owned bank which met only 29 percent of its disbursement target. [10] He received an Integrity Award for his service by the Financial Institutions Department of the Ministry of Finance. [8] [11] He is a member of the Bangladesh Association of Banks. [12]

On 3 March 2021, Karim was appointed managing director of Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation; he was serving as the deputy managing director of Sonali Bank Limited. [8] He signed a customer service agreement with Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited in August 2021. [13]

Karim was appointed managing director of Sonali Bank Limited on 28 August 2022. [7] He replaced Ataur Rahman Prodhan. [14] He was appointed to the post for a three year term. [15] He signed an agreement with Md. Monzur Mofiz, managing director of One Bank Limited so that Sonali Bank could use its financial app 'OK Wallet'. [16] He is a director of Central Depository Bangladesh Limited. [17] He is a director of Padma Bank Limited. [18] He is the chairman of Bangladesh Foreign Exchange Dealers' Association. [19]

The bank is listed with both Dhaka Stock Exchange Ltd. and Chittagong Stock Exchange Ltd. Islami Bank Bangladesh limited has become the country's top deposit holder as reported in the bank's managerial conference held on Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Dhaka as reported by the leading daily of the country,'the daily star ' on 16th January 2022.

BASIC Bank Limited is a fully government owned bank in Bangladesh which was founded on 2 August 1988. The bank was founded to finance small enterprises. Professor Dr. Abul Hashem is chairman of the bank. Md. Anisur Rahman is the managing director of the bank. More than 45 billion taka loan was defaulted from the bank, many of the loans were to companies that existed on paper only, with the support of former chairperson Sheikh Abdul Hye Bachhu. 100 borrowers accounted for 86 percent of the defaulted loans.

Central Depository Bangladesh Limited is a Bangladesh government regulatory agency that records and facilates the trade of securities in Bangladesh. It is the National Numbering Agency for International Securities Identification Number in Bangladesh and member of the Association of National Numbering Agencies. Sheikh Kabir Hossain is chairman of the board of directors. It is Bangladesh's only securities depository enterprise.
