Career

In 1984, Arora got enrolled at bar and since 1986 has been practising law at Supreme Court of India. In 1989, she qualified and became an Advocates-on-Record at the Supreme Court. She had also, for a brief period, worked with Goodwin and Soble, an international law firm based in Washington DC. She was also a partner at an Indian law firm Hemant Sahai and Associates. [3] In 2010, her name was recommended by a judges' collegium for elevation as a judge of the Delhi High Court however she later withdrew her consent from the judgeship. [4] She was also the standing counsel for the Election Commission of India. In September 2013, full bench of Supreme Court headed by then Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam designated her as a senior counsel/senior advocate being only the fifth woman to be designated so. She was one of the members of the drafting committee which drafted the regulations The Gender Sensitisation & Sexual Harassment of Women at the Supreme Court of India (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal), Regulations, 2013 to protect and provide grievance redressal to women lawyers from sexual harassment at the Supreme Court. [5] In the case of Nitisha vs Union of India, Arora was the counsel for one of the petitioners. [6]

Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 is a legislative act in India that seeks to protect women from sexual harassment at their place of work. It was passed by the Lok Sabha on 3 September 2012. It was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 26 February 2013. The Bill got the assent of the President on 23 April 2013. The Act came into force from 9 December 2013. This statute superseded the Vishaka Guidelines for Prevention Of Sexual Harassment (POSH) introduced by the Supreme Court (SC) of India. It was reported by the International Labour Organization that very few Indian employers were compliant to this statute. Most Indian employers have not implemented the law despite the legal requirement that any workplace with more than 10 employees need to implement it. According to a FICCI-EY November 2015 report, 36% of Indian companies and 25% among MNCs are not compliant with the Sexual Harassment Act, 2013. The government has threatened to take stern action against employers who fail to comply with this law.

Ranjan Gogoi 46th Chief Justice of India

Ranjan Gogoi is an Indian former Judge of the Supreme Court of India who served as the 46th Chief Justice of India for 13 months between 2018 and 2019. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Ram Nath Kovind on 16 March 2020. He is the third Supreme Court judge to serve the Rajya Sabha, and the first to be nominated to his seat, after Ranganath Mishra and Baharul Islam, who were elected as members of the Indian National Congress. The nomination by government and acceptance was highly criticized by former judges of the Supreme Court.
