Meherpur University is a public university in Meherpur District. It is the 53rd public university in Bangladesh. [1] [2]

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina desired to establish a public university in every district of Bangladesh. So parliament passed the Mujibnagar University Act 2023 to establish a university at Meherpur District. It was proposed to be established as Meherpur University but later it was proposed to be established as Mujibnagar University in honor of the provisional capital of Bangladesh during the War of Independence of Bangladesh.

Md. Rabiul Islam was appointed the university's first vice chancellor in November 2023

History

On January 16, 2025 the interim Government of Bangladesh changed the name of the university To Meherpur University from mujibnagar University.

This university is now early stages of establishment. It Is Planned To start its academic activities from session 2024-25.

Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad was a Bangladeshi politician. He was the Minister of Commerce in the third Mujib Rahman ministry under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and assumed the presidency of Bangladesh after the Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975. He praised the assassins as "sons of the sun" and put cabinet ministers loyal to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in jail. He was himself deposed by another coup, less than three months later on November 3, 1975.

Meherpur District is the northwestern district of Khulna Division in southwestern Bangladesh. It is bordered by the Indian state of West Bengal to the west, and by the Bangladeshi districts of Kushtia and Chuadanga to the east. Pre-independence Meherpur was a subdivision of Nadia district. Mujibnagar, formerly known as Baidyanathtala (Boiddonathtola) and Bhoborpara, is a town in the Mujibnagar Upazila of Meherpur District in Khulna, Bangladesh. The Provisional Government of Bangladesh was formed on 10 April 1971, however, sworn in on 17 April 1971 in this place by the elected representatives of the Bengalees, that led the Bangladesh Liberation War, who were leading the guerrilla war for the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. The place was renamed Mujibnagar by the proclamation of independence, in honour of then imprisoned Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had declared Bangladesh independent. The actual capital of the government while in exile was Calcutta. A memorial complex covering 20.10 acres (8.13 ha) has been built at the site where the ministers of that first government took their oaths.

Muhammad Salahuddin Miaji is a retired major general of Bangladesh Army. He was the general officer commanding of 66th infantry division and area commander of Rangpur Area of the Bangladesh Army in the Rangpur region. He served as the vice-chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Professionals. He is the former military secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Satkhira University of Science and Technology, commonly known and abbreviated as SatSTU, is a public university in Satkhira. It is 2nd Science technology university in Khulna division. It was established by Bangladesh National Parliament through Satkhira University of Science And Technology act 2023.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mujibnagar Memorial</span> Public monument in Meherpur District, Bangladesh

Mujibnagar Memorial is located at Mujibnagar in Meherpur District. This memorial was built at the place where the Provisional Government of Bangladesh was formed during the Liberation War. Its architect is Tanveer Naquib. Its construction work started in 1974 and completed in 1987. The Bangladesh government built a 23-level memorial to preserve the memory of independence. In 1996, first Hasina ministry started the construction of Mujibnagar Complex.

<i>Mukti Maitree</i> Building in Kushtia, Bangladesh

Mukti Maitree is a sculpture located at Chorhash intersection in Kushtia. It is also known as Mukti Mitra. On December 10, 1971, many soldiers of Mitro Bahini were killed during a battle with Pakistani troops. The next day on December 11, the Pakistani army was defeated by a counter-attack of Mitro Bahini and Kushtia was liberated. A memorial was initiated in 1990 to preserve this memory. It is the first monument in the country to commemorate the members of the Mitro Bahini in Bangladesh.
