Melissa Drexler, who was nicknamed in the media as "The Prom Mom," is an American woman who, as a teenage high school student in 1997, delivered a baby in a restroom stall during her high school prom dance. The baby was later found dead in a trash bin, and Drexler pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, having put the infant in the trash can and then returned to the dance. She was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment. After serving a little over three years, she was released on parole.
Drexler was an only child from a middle-class Catholic family [1] and lived in Forked River, New Jersey. [2] She attended Lacey Township High School in the Lanoka Harbor section of Lacey Township, New Jersey and had plans for a career in the fashion industry. [1]
Drexler kept her pregnancy secret from the baby's likely father John Lewis, [3] her parents and friends. At five feet seven inches (170 cm) tall, and about 130 pounds (59 kg), she apparently showed no signs of her pregnancy. [4] On June 6, 1997, Drexler gave birth in a bathroom stall at her senior prom, twenty minutes after complaining of stomach cramps in the car she had arrived in. She retrieved the baby from the toilet bowl, placed it in a plastic bag, and deposited it in a trash can. It is thought that she severed the umbilical cord on the serrated edge of a sanitary napkin dispenser and suffocated the child. [2] According to the prosecutor, a friend asked if she was all right, and she replied "I'll be done pretty soon. Go tell the boys we'll be right out." She then returned to the dance floor, ate a salad, and danced with her boyfriend. When Drexler and her friends were asked by teachers about the blood in the bathroom, she replied that she was having a heavy menstrual period. The baby was discovered in a trash bin by a janitor, after a school nurse cleaned the bloody bathroom stall, emptied the trash can, and became suspicious of the weight of the trash bag. [2] [1]
As part of a plea agreement, Drexler pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter on August 20, 1998. [5] As of 2011 court transcripts had not been released. [1] She was sentenced to 15 years in prison. [5] On November 26, 2001, she was freed on parole after serving three years and one month. [6]

The murder attracted national attention and subsequently led to the introduction of "Megan's Law", which requires law enforcement to disclose details relating to the location of registered sex offenders.
Sakia Gunn was a 15-year-old African American lesbian who was murdered in what has been deemed a hate crime in Newark, New Jersey. Richard McCullough, was charged with her death and sentenced to 20 years in prison. In 2008 a documentary was released about Gunn's murder, titled Dreams Deferred: The Sakia Gunn Film Project.
Amy S. Grossberg is an American woman who delivered a baby at a Comfort Inn in Newark, Delaware, in November 1996, assisted only by her then-boyfriend Brian C. Peterson, who later threw the baby into a dumpster. In March 1998, Peterson pled guilty to manslaughter and was given the mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison; on April 22, 1998, Grossberg agreed to a plea bargain, and was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison on July 9, 1998.
Malar Balasubramanian was an American pediatrician who pleaded guilty on January 30, 2006 to a charge of involuntary manslaughter of her mother and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Shirley Winters is a convicted murderer, arsonist, and suspected serial killer from upstate New York. In 1980, she smothered her five-month-old son, Ronald Winters III. In 2007, she drowned 23-month-old Ryan Rivers. She is also suspected of killing three siblings in childhood, setting a fire which killed two of her older children in 1979, and on the day prior to that killed a friend's three children. Per a plea bargain, she cannot be prosecuted for those.

Jon-Niece Jones was a nine-year-old American girl whose unidentified skeletal remains were found near the gated forest of New Jersey's Six Flags Great Adventure theme park, by a hunter in search of deer. The case was showcased by America's Most Wanted in 2009 in hopes of generating leads for the unsolved case. Jones was identified in October 2012. Her mother, Elisha, died three months after Jon-Niece was murdered; Jon-Niece's aunt, her aunt's boyfriend, and an uncle were charged with concealing evidence of the child's death, believed to have been the result of abuse by her mother.
The FEAR militia was an American terrorist group of between four and eleven individuals that the State of Georgia alleged in 2012 to have planned to destroy a dam and poison apple orchards in Washington State, set off explosives in Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia, and assassinate President Barack Obama. Four of the individuals charged were soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia. The group killed two people in an attempt to prevent them from revealing their plans to the public. The group used the Army to recruit militia members, who wore distinctive tattoos that resemble an alpha and omega symbol.
Nicole Nadra Baukus is an American woman convicted of two counts of vehicular manslaughter stemming from a fatal car collision on June 29, 2012, in which she was driving intoxicated. Baukus pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 38 years in prison with the possibility of parole. Highway surveillance cameras showed Baukus' vehicle traveling on the wrong side of Interstate 45 after she had consumed alcohol at a nearby bar. A later request for a new trial was denied. Baukus attended and graduated from Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas.
Jarmecca Yvonne "Nikki" Whitehead was a 34-year-old mother of 16-year-old identical twins Jasmiyah Kaneesha and Tasmiyah Janeesha Whitehead. On the afternoon of January 13, 2010, she was found dead in the bathroom of her Conyers, Georgia, home in the Bridle Ridge Walk subdivision. She had been beaten with a vase and stabbed repeatedly. Her daughters were arrested four months after the slaying on May 21, 2010, and charged with murder. Both initially pleaded not guilty. In a plea agreement, each twin pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter in 2014. They were sentenced to serve 30 years in prison.
On July 5, 1982, Alfred Podgis and his wife Rosemary Podgis were fatally shot in their home in Loch Arbour, New Jersey, United States. Scott Robert Franz, Rosemary's son by a previous marriage, was convicted of the murder of Alfred, his stepfather. Franz's high school friend Bruce Anthony Curtis, a Canadian citizen who was visiting the Podgis home, was convicted of the aggravated manslaughter of Rosemary. Both were sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment.
Ronald Eugene Woodham IV was a formerly unidentified American baby and homicide victim whose body was found off of South Carolina Highway 544, on the outskirts of Conway in Horry County, South Carolina on December 4, 2008. Known as "Baby Boy Horry" while unidentified, his case remained cold for over 11 years, until his parents were identified in March 2020. His mother, Jennifer Sahr, left him in a box on the side of Highway 544, leaving him to die of hypothermia. Sahr was arrested in March 2020, and pleaded guilty to manslaughter in his death in 2022. In June 2023, she was sentenced to 4 years in prison.
Jerome Dennis is an American serial killer who kidnapped and murdered five women and girls in two cities in Essex County, New Jersey, in late 1991 and early 1992. At the time of the murders, he was on parole for a prior rape conviction. After his arrest, Dennis pleaded guilty and was later sentenced to life imprisonment in 1993.
On May 7, 2017, 18-year-old Brooke Skylar Richardson gave birth at home and buried her newborn daughter in the backyard of her parents' house in Carlisle, Ohio. Two months later, she described what had happened to her doctor, who reported the incident to police. Richardson was acquitted of charges of aggravated murder, child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter. She was found guilty of abuse of a corpse and received three years probation, which was ended early by the court.
From 1996 to 2006, Megan Huntsman, an American woman, murdered six of her newborn children shortly after giving birth to them in Utah.
On January 4, 2022, 911 reported that 64-year-old Sheila Fletcher and her husband, Clay Fletcher, had found her 36-year-old daughter Lacey Ellen Fletcher dead on their couch. It was revealed that for at least 12 years, Lacey Fletcher had been neglected by her parents after becoming unable to leave her house due to a cognitive health decline. It was discovered that after this decline, Sheila and Clay had left their daughter on their couch to suffer in her own excrement and allowed bugs to eat at her body, failing to attempt to get her medical care. The killing gained significant media coverage due to the gruesome nature of the crime.
