Michael John Aziz is an American research scientist and engineer and the Gene and Tracy Sykes Professor of Materials and Energy Technologies at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He is an affiliated faculty member of the Harvard University Center for the Environment, for which he served from 2009 to 2018 as the faculty coordinator for the Graduate Consortium for Energy and Environment. He is also Chief Scientist and a co-founder of Quino Energy, Inc. [1]
Aziz had received his B.S. from the California Institute of Technology in 1978 and then got his Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University in 1983 while working under the direction of David Turnbull. [2] As a postdoc, he had spent two years at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory where he was a Eugene P. Wigner Postdoctoral Fellow. Since 1986 he has been a faculty member on what is now the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and he is currently the Gene and Tracy Sykes Professor of Materials and Energy Technologies. [3]
Starting in 2012, Aziz has worked with Alán Aspuru-Guzik, Roy Gordon and the United States Department of Energy to develop aqueous-soluble organic flow batteries for grid-scale electrical energy storage. [4] [5] In 2016 he used vitamin B2 to improve the work of an organic battery that was developed two years prior. [6] The battery was later named Organic Mega Flow Battery, the research of which was published in journal Joule the same year. [7] Some of his research has resulted in patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. [8]
The vanadium redox battery (VRB), also known as the vanadium flow battery (VFB) or vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), is a type of rechargeable flow battery. It employs vanadium ions as charge carriers. The battery uses vanadium's ability to exist in a solution in four different oxidation states to make a battery with a single electroactive element instead of two. For several reasons, including their relative bulkiness, vanadium batteries are typically used for grid energy storage, i.e., attached to power plants/electrical grids.

Michael Makepeace Thackeray is a South African chemist and battery materials researcher. He is mainly known for his work on electrochemically active cathode materials. In the mid-1980s he co-discovered the manganese oxide spinel family of cathodes for lithium ion batteries while working in the lab of John Goodenough at the University of Oxford. In 1998, while at Argonne National Laboratory, he led a team that first reported the NMC cathode technology. Patent protection around the concept and materials were first issued in 2005 to Argonne National Laboratory to a team with Thackeray, Khalil Amine, Jaekook Kim, and Christopher Johnson. The reported invention is now widely used in consumer electronics and electric vehicles.
Esther Sans Takeuchi is a materials scientist and chemical engineer, working on energy storage systems and power sources for biomedical devices. She is also a distinguished professor at Stony Brook University and a chief scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory. She holds more than 150 U.S. patents. “The battery was invented once and reinvented over 100 times. I don’t own the patent. The company does. It was called Greatbatch. Now it’s called Integer Corp. When you join a company, you sign over your patent rights to the company.”
Cynthia Friend is an American chemist. She currently serves as president and chief operating officer of The Kavli Foundation. She is on leave from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University. Friend was the first female full professor of chemistry at Harvard, attaining the position in 1989. Friend has held the Theodore William Richards Chiar in Chemistry and served as professor of materials science in the Paulson School of Engineering.
