Borgolte was educated at the University of Münster, where he gained his doctorate in 1975. In 1981 he qualified as a professor at the University of Freiburg, where he was assistant to the palaeographer Johanne Authenrieth from 1975 onwards. [1] in 1991 he was one of the first professors newly appointed to Humboldt-University after the Berlin Wall came down. He held the chair for Medieval History until 2018. Since 2007 Borgolte is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften and as such delegated to the scientific board of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. [2] Together with Bernd Schneidmüller he was coordinator of the research program SPP 1173 "Integration und Desintegration der Kulturen im europäischen Mittelalter", funded by the German Research Foundation. In 2011 he was awarded with an ERC Advanced Grant for his research program "Foundations in Medieval Societies — Crosscultural Comparisons". [3] Collaborating with the Byzantinist Zachary Chitwood, the Indologist Annette Schmiedchen, the medieval historian Tillmann Lohse and others he prepared a three volume encyclopedia on this topic which promptly stimulated scholarly discussions. The Deutsches Archiv für Erforschung des Mittelalters is a historical journal on history between 400 CE and 1500 CE, published by the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH), the German institute for study of the Middle Ages. It numbers its volumes from 1937, named the Deutsches Archiv für Geschichte des Mittelalters from volume 7 (1944). Its forerunners were the twelve-volume 1820-1874 Archiv der Gesellschaft für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde and the fifty-volume 1876-1935 Neues Archiv der Gesellschaft für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde. It has been published in Weimar then Cologne by Böhlau Verlag, its current publisher, and is the oldest German-language journal on medieval history.
Tillmann Lohse is a German author, editor, academic, and scholar of Medieval History. In 2003 he was honoured with the "Goslarer Geschichtspreis" for his research on the Salian emperor Henry III. In 2009 he obtained his doctoral degree from Humboldt-University of Berlin. His dissertation dealt with the collegiate church SS. Simon and Jude in Goslar whose manuscripts and files have been stored in various German and Austrian archives since its secularization at the beginning of the 19th century. From these sources Lohse edited a 12th-century urbarium, a 13th-century chronicle and a 15th-century ordinal, all of which were once composed by members of the chapter. Besides pious endowments Lohse's research focusses mainly on the history of migrations, especially the ones of missionaries, and mercenaries, as well as on digital diplomatics. During the spring term of 2017 Lohse was guest professor at Goethe University Frankfurt, since fall 2017 he teaches as an associate professor at Humboldt. In 2021 he was awarded a prize for promoting democracy by Stendal district administrator Patrick Puhlmann.
