Michael Duryea Williams (born 1957) is an American physicist, professor at Clark Atlanta University, and current president of the AVS: Science and Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing (formerly American Vacuum Society). He is the first African American president of AVS. [1]

Early life and education

Williams was born in Dothan, Alabama, and attended Dothan High School. [2]

Williams attended Morehouse College and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, for his undergraduate studies. He received dual bachelor's degrees in 1979, with a B.S. in physics from Morehouse College and a B.S. in nuclear engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. [3] While at Morehouse College, Williams received the Max C. Fleishman scholarship and was a member of the Society of Physics Students and the Atlanta University Center photography club. [2]

He then went on to earn a master's degree and PhD in physics at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. [4] His thesis at Stanford was titled "The Effect of Chemical Reactivity and Charge Transfer on Gallium-Arsenide (110) Schottky Barrier Formation." [5] His doctoral advisor was William E. Spicer and he received his PhD in 1987. [3] His co-advisor was Arthur Schawlow, and he also studied under professors Ingolf Lindau, Piero Pianetta, C. Robert Helms and Walter Harrison while at Stanford. [5]

Career

Following graduation, Williams completed an appointment as a visiting scientist at IBM's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California, and subsequently began working at the Optoelectronics Research Department of AT&T Bell Laboratories (now Bell Labs) in 1987. [6]

In 2002, Williams became chair of the Committee on Minorities of the American Physical Society. The COM bestows the annual Edward A. Bouchet Award, and Williams also organized a session titled "The New Face of Physics," which included discussions on the demographics of minorities in physics. [7] [8]

Williams joined the faculty at Clark Atlanta University in 1994, where he teaches currently. [4] He began as an associate professor of physics and director of the Center of Excellence in Microelectronics and Photonics. [9] He is professor and chair of the physics department and director of the Center for Excellence in Materials Physics (CEMP) at Clark Atlanta University. [3] [10] He is also a member of Clark Atlanta's Faculty Research Council. [11]

Williams has been a part of numerous professional organizations throughout his career, including AVS and the American Physical Society. He is also a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, Beta Kappa Chi, and Sigma Xi honor societies, and served on the National Academy of Sciences’ Board of Army Science and Technology study committee for a review of directed energy technology. In 2014, Williams was elected to the board of directors of the AVS. [4] Previously, he served in AVS roles including director, trustee, liaison to the AIP Liaison Committee on Under-represented Minorities, executive officer for the electronics materials and processing division, chair of the AVS diversity and inclusion committee, chair of the AVS chapters, divisions and groups (CDG) committee and chair of the governance committee. [3] In 2021, he became an AVS fellow, and in 2022 was the society's president-elect. In 2023 he began his term as AVS president. [6] Upon becoming president, Williams became the first African American person to lead AVS. [1]

Research

Williams' research has focused on "achieving a fundamental understanding of the physical processes, growth morphology, interfacial strain and electronic structure modifications that occur at the surfaces and interfaces of epitaxially grown films and semiconductors," as well as the processing and growth morphology of 2-D metal dichalcogenides. [3]

Williams developed a free-standing quantum well (FSQW) for use in laser technology, and was awarded a patent for this concept. [9] [12]

The three-decade tenure of Benjamin Mays during the mid-20th century led to strengthened finances, an enrollment boom, and increased academic competitiveness. The college has played a key role in the development of the civil rights movement and racial equality in the United States.

The Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUC Consortium) is the oldest and largest contiguous consortium of African-American higher education institutions in the United States. The center consists of four historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in southwest Atlanta, Georgia: Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and the Morehouse School of Medicine. The consortium structure allows for students to cross-register at the other institutions in order to attain a broader collegiate experience. They also share the Robert W. Woodruff Library, a dual degree engineering program, and career planning and placement services.

An ohmic contact is a non-rectifying electrical junction: a junction between two conductors that has a linear current–voltage (I–V) curve as with Ohm's law. Low-resistance ohmic contacts are used to allow charge to flow easily in both directions between the two conductors, without blocking due to rectification or excess power dissipation due to voltage thresholds.

The rectifying metal–semiconductor junction forms a Schottky barrier, making a device known as a Schottky diode, while the non-rectifying junction is called an ohmic contact.

Anthony Michael Johnson is an American experimental physicist, a professor of physics, and a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He is the director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Photonics Research (CASPR), also situated on campus at UMBC. Since his election to the 2002 term as president of the Optical Society, formerly the Optical Society of America, Johnson has the distinction of being the first and only African-American president to date. Ultrashort pulses of light have been used to address technical and logistical challenges in medicine, telecommunications, homeland security, and have many other applications that enhance contemporary life.

Jerry M. Woodall is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Davis who is widely known for his revolutionary work on LEDs and semiconductors. Over the course of his career, he has published close to 400 scientific articles and his work has directly contributed to the development of major technologies that are used around the world, such as TVs, optical fibers, and mobile phones. Woodall currently holds over 80 U.S. patents for a variety of inventions and has received prestigious awards from IBM, NASA, and the U.S. President for his contributions to science, technology, and humanity.

Mohamed M. Atalla was an Egyptian-American engineer, physicist, cryptographer, inventor and entrepreneur. He was a semiconductor pioneer who made important contributions to modern electronics. He is best known for the first working demonstration of the MOSFET in 1959, which along with Atalla's earlier surface passivation processes, had a significant impact on the development of the electronics industry. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Schottky junction solar cell</span>

In a basic Schottky-junction (Schottky-barrier) solar cell, an interface between a metal and a semiconductor provides the band bending necessary for charge separation. Traditional solar cells are composed of p-type and n-type semiconductor layers sandwiched together, forming the source of built-in voltage. Due to differing energy levels between the Fermi level of the metal and the conduction band of the semiconductor, an abrupt potential difference is created, instead of the smooth band transition observed across a p-n junction in a standard solar cell, and this is a Schottky height barrier. Although vulnerable to higher rates of thermionic emission, manufacturing of Schottky barrier solar cells proves to be cost-effective and industrially scalable.

Williams was born on February 12, 1912, in Sparkman then grew up in Chicot County, Arkansas. An African American, Williams attended Morehouse College where he received his bachelor's degree in philosophy and later attended Howard University earning his master's degree in divinity.

In 1955 he published the first measurements of light emission by semiconductor diodes made from crystals of gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium antimonide (GaSb), and indium phosphide (InP). GaAs, GaSb, and InP are examples of III-V semiconductors. The III-V semiconductors absorb and emit light much more strongly than silicon, which is the best-known semiconductor. Braunstein's devices are the forerunners of contemporary LED lighting and semiconductor lasers, which typically employ III-V semiconductors. The 2000 and 2014 Nobel Prizes in Physics were awarded for further advances in closely related fields.
