Michael Gilbertson (born 1987 [1] ) [2] is an American composer, conductor and pianist. He was one of three finalists for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in music, making him one of the youngest finalists in the history of the award. [3]

Early life and education

Gilbertson earned degrees from The Juilliard School and Yale University. Among his composition teachers have been Samuel Adler, David Lang, John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse, Aaron Jay Kernis, Martin Bresnick, Ezra Laderman, Hannah Lash and Christopher Theofanidis.

Career

He is currently the BMI Composer in Residence with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, a position for which he has written a guitar concerto and an oboe concerto. [4] His published music includes choral works with Boosey & Hawkes and G. Schirmer, and orchestral works with Theodore Presser. His orchestral music has been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and many regional orchestras,. [5] An opera of his was performed by the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center; [6] his choral music by Musica Sacra, The Crossing, [7] and many others, and his five ballets have been performed by (among others) the New York Choreographic Institute and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. His music was featured in a 2006 documentary, Rehearsing a Dream , that was nominated for an Academy Award. He is a professor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. [8]

Among the awards he has received are five Morton Gould Awards from ASCAP, a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a BMI Student Composer Award and, in 2013, BMI's prestigious Boudleaux Bryant Commission. [9] His piano trio Fold by Fold received the Israel Prize from the Society for New Music. In March, 2016, Musical America chose him as New Artist of the Month. [10]

In 2009, Gilbertson founded a festival, Chamberfest Dubuque, as an annual fundraiser for the school at which he started his musical studies, Northeast Iowa School of Music. He returns to direct it annually. [11]

Chamber Symphony is a 1992 composition for a 15-member chamber orchestra by American composer John Adams, inspired by Arnold Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1, Op. 9. It is a three-movement work that takes about 23 minutes to perform.

Jeffrey "Jeff" Anderson is an American tuba player. As of 2017, he is the Principal Tubist in the San Francisco Symphony. Anderson was educated at the Indiana University School of Music and Arizona State University. His teachers have included Harvey Phillips, Daniel Perantoni, Arnold Jacobs, Roger Bobo and Jim Self. He is an active soloist, clinician, chamber musician, and teacher. He has performed at the International Brass Conference, and is a frequent recitalist in the United States and abroad. He has been featured as a soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony.

Jennifer Margaret Barker is a Scottish-American classical composer and pianist. Her compositional style is highly influenced by the landscape, culture and musical heritage of Scotland. She is Professor of Composition and Theory at the University of Delaware. Her music has been recorded on the Naxos Records, Composers Recordings Inc., New World Records, Albany Records, Meyer Media and PnOVA Recordings labels. She is published by Boosey & Hawkes, Theodore Presser Company, Vanderbeek & Imrie Ltd., Southern Percussion and McKenna-Keddie Publishing.
