Michael K. Denk (or Karl Michael Denk) is a retired Professor of chemistry at the University of Guelph, Ontario. [1] [2]
Michael Denk obtained his M.Sc. at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany (1989) and his Ph.D. at the Technical University of Munich (1992), advised by W. Herrmann, [3] with a dissertation on cyclic metalloamides. [2] He has previously held academic positions at the University of Toronto (1995-2001), Purdue University (1994–1995), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1993–1994) and was head of research on Tibetan ethnobotany at Klinge Holding & Research. [1] He is known for his laminated eyebrows in the chemistry community. In 2022, he left Guelph to live off a plot of land in an undisclosed location in Europe.
Michael Denk's research ranges over several areas of organic and inorganic chemistry, including carbenes and their analogs, carbenium salts, silicon, germanium, and tin chemistry, volatile metal complexes, inorganic photochemistry, ionic liquids, and more; as well as applications such as chemical vapor deposition processes, semiconductors, thin films, etc. [1] He has recently established the reality of the Wanzlick equilibrium, which had been put in doubt by experiments of D. Lemal and others. [4]

The triazol-5-ylidenes are a group of persistent carbenes which includes the 1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene system and the 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene system. As opposed to the now ubiquitous NHC systems based on imidazole rings, these carbenes are structured from triazole rings. 1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene can be thought of as an analog member of the NHC family, with an extra nitrogen in the ring, while 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene is better thought of as a mesoionic carbene (MIC). Both isomers of this group of carbenes benefit from enhanced stability, with certain examples exhibiting greater thermal stability, and others extended shelf life.

The Wanzlick equilibrium is a chemical equilibrium between a relatively stable carbene compound and its dimer. The equilibrium was proposed to apply to certain electron-rich alkenes, such as tetraminoethylenes, which have been called "carbene dimers." Such equilibria occur, but the mechanism does not proceed simply, but requires catalysts.

Hans-Werner Wanzlick (1917-1988) was a German chemist. A Professor of chemistry at the Berlin Technical University he is notable for work on persistent carbenes and for proposing the Wanzlick equilibrium between saturated imidazolin-2-ylidenes and their dimers — which he called "das doppelte Lottchen", after a 1949 novel by Erich Kästner about a pair of mischievous twins.

Karsten Meyer is a German inorganic chemist and Chair of Inorganic and General Chemistry at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). His research involves the coordination chemistry of transition metals as well as uranium coordination chemistry, small molecule activation with these coordination complexes, and the synthesis of new chelating ligands. He is the 2017 recipient of the Elhuyar-Goldschmidt Award of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry, the Ludwig-Mond Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the L.A. Chugaev Commemorative Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences, among other awards. He also serves as an Associate Editor of the journal Organometallics since 2014.
Organoberyllium chemistry involves the synthesis and properties of organometallic compounds featuring the group 2 alkaline earth metal beryllium (Be). The area remains understudied, relative to the chemistry of other main-group elements, because although metallic beryllium is relatively unreactive, its dust causes berylliosis and compounds are toxic. Organoberyllium compounds are typically prepared by transmetallation or alkylation of beryllium chloride.
