Michael Philip Mortell is an Irish mathematician and academic. He was the president of University College Cork from 1989 to 1999. [1] Mortell also had a sporting career and played hurling with a number of club sides and the Cork senior hurling team.
Born in Cork,Mortell was educated at Charleville CBS Secondary School. He studied for his primary degree in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics at University College Cork (UCC) where he was awarded a BSc in 1961 and an MSc in 1963. Mortell subsequently studied at the California Institute of Technology and was awarded a PhD for a thesis on "Waves on Shells" in 1968. [2]
Mortell was named associate professor at the Center for the Application of Mathematics at Lehigh University,Pennsylvania in 1967. From 1973 he was statutory lecturer in the department of Mathematical Physics at UCC and later Professor of Applied Mathematics. He was appointed registrar in 1979 and was named president in 1989. Mortell held a personal chair in Applied Mathematics from 1999 until he retired in 2006. [2] [3] [4]
Mortell first played hurling with the CBS Charleville team in the Harty Cup. He joined the Rath Lúirc intermediate team in the 1958 season. Mortell lined out with UCC GAA from 1959 until 1963,during which time he won three Fitzgibbon Cup titles. He was also a member of the team that won the college's inaugural Cork Senior Hurling Championship title in the 1963 Cork Senior Hurling Championship. Mortell first appeared on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork minor hurling team during the 1959 Munster MHC. [5] He later played with the Cork senior team for one season. [6] Mortell ended his club career with Carrigaline. [7]
Nicholas J. "Nicky" English is an Irish retired hurler who played as a full-forward for the Tipperary senior team.
Daniel J. Clifford,better known as Donal Clifford,is an Irish former hurler and manager. At club level he played with Cloyne and Glen Rovers and was also a member of the Cork senior hurling team. Regarded as one of Cork's greatest ever underage players,Clifford was the first player to wear protective headgear in a senior inter-county match.
Seánie Barry is an Irish former hurler and manager. At club level he played with Sarsfields,Bride Rovers,University College Cork and Imokilly and was also a member of the Cork senior hurling team.

UCC is a football and hurling club associated with University College Cork. UCC teams play in the Cork Senior Football Championship and Cork Senior Hurling Championship as well as the two main third-level competitions namely the Sigerson Cup in football,the Fitzgibbon Cup in hurling and the Ashbourne Cup in camogie. They also compete against inter-county sides in the pre-season McGrath Cup (football) and Waterford Crystal Cup (hurling). The piratical skull and crossbones logo on the team shirt,which first appeared on the rugby team of what was then known as Queen’s College Cork was appropriated in the mid-1910s by the GAA clubs,and in 1929 by the UCC hockey club.
Simon Murphy was an Irish hurler and Gaelic footballer. At club level he played with St Michael's,Blascktock and University College Cork and was also a member of the Cork senior hurling team. In spite of a brief senior career,he was one of the most decorated players of his generation having won seven All-Ireland medals at various levels in both codes between 1967 and 1972.
William Ego is an Irish hurler who plays for Duhallow Junior Championship club Kilbrin. He currently plays as a centre-back,but can also be deployed as a wing-back. Ego is a former member of the Cork senior hurling team.
