Finbar Patrick 'Barry' McGuigan MBE is an Irish retired professional boxer and current boxing promoter. Born in Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland, McGuigan was nicknamed The Clones Cyclone and became the WBA and lineal featherweight world champion. He was very popular with Irish and British audiences, representing neutrality and peace in a time when Ireland, where he lived, was affected by The Troubles. In 2005 he was inducted into the international boxing hall of fame.
Trevor Berbick was a Jamaican Canadian professional boxer who competed from 1976 to 2000. He won the WBC heavyweight title in 1986 by defeating Pinklon Thomas, then lost it in his first defense in the same year to Mike Tyson. Berbick was also the last boxer to fight Muhammad Ali, defeating him in 1981.
Howard Edward Davis Jr. was an American amateur and professional boxer. Growing up on Long Island as the eldest of 10 children, Davis first learned boxing from his father. After being inspired by a movie about Muhammad Ali, Davis embarked on his amateur career. He won the 1976 Olympic gold medal one week after his mother died. He was also awarded the Val Barker Trophy at the Olympics, beating out such boxers as Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael Spinks and Leon Spinks.

It had been 16 years since the previous appearance of the nation at the Summer Olympics, when it made its debut at the 1968 Games in Mexico City, Mexico. The Central African Republic was represented by three athletes; marathon runner Adolphe Ambowodé and two boxers, Dieudonné Kossi and Antoine Longoudé. There were no medals won by the trio.
Ali Mazaheri is an amateur boxer from Iran, who competed in the 2006 Asian Games in the Heavyweight division and won the gold medal in the final bout against Uzbekistan's Jasur Matchanov 25–19. Mazaheri won the gold medal of the 2007 Ulan Bator in the Heavyweight division.
Ian Clyde is a retired boxer from Canada, who represented his native country at the 1976 Summer Olympics. After defeating Charlie Magri of Great Britain, he was defeated in the quarterfinals of the men's flyweight division by Cuba's eventual silver medalist Ramón Duvalón. Clyde won a silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 1979 Pan American Games. He also competed at the 1975 Pan American Games. Ian Clyde has followed his career as a professional athlete to offer personal fitness boxing coaching and competitive boxing instruction to young athletes in Montreal.
Chris Finnegan MBE was a British professional boxer of Irish descent born in Iver, Buckinghamshire, England.
The men's middleweight event was part of the boxing programme at the 1924 Summer Olympics. The weight class was the third-heaviest contested, and allowed boxers of up to 160 pounds. The competition was held from Tuesday July 15, 1924 to Sunday July 20, 1924. Twenty-three boxers from 15 nations competed.
Vasile Tiţă was a Romanian amateur middleweight boxer. He won a silver medal at his first major international tournament, the 1952 Olympics, losing in the final to Floyd Patterson. After that he competed at the 1953, 1955 and 1957 European championships with the best result of reaching the quarterfinals in 1955. Domestically he won seven consecutive national titles in 1951–57, six in the 71 kg and one in the 75 kg division. He died aged 85 after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for a decade.

Sylvester "The Master Blaster" Mittee is a Saint Lucian/British amateur lightweight and professional light welter/welter/light middleweight boxer of the 1970s and '80s who as an amateur won the 1973 Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) Junior Class-B title boxing out of Crown and Manor ABC, Hoxton, London, won the 1976 Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) lightweight title, against Thomas McCallum, boxing out of Repton Amateur Boxing Club, Bethnal Green, London, and represented Great Britain as a lightweight in the Boxing at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, losing to eventual silver medal winner Simion Cuţov of Romania, and as a professional won the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) Southern (England) Area light welterweight title, BBBofC British welterweight title and Commonwealth welterweight title, and was a challenger for the BBBofC British light welterweight title against Clinton McKenzie, and European Boxing Union (EBU) welterweight title against Lloyd Honeyghan, his professional fighting weight varied from 139 lb, i.e. light welterweight to 151 1⁄2 lb, i.e. light middleweight.
