Michael Stephen Shackleton is a South African politician who served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from May 2019 to April 2022. Prior to serving in the provincial legislature, he was a Tshwane councillor and a Member of the National Assembly. Formerly a member of the Democratic Alliance, he resigned from the party on 28 April 2022 and joined ActionSA.

Background

Shackleton is from Centurion in Pretoria. His father died from cancer in 2001 just before he started high school and his mother died of heart failure in 2008, while he was at university. [1] He developed a stutter after the death of his parents. [1]

Shackleton has an LLB from the University of Pretoria and is an attorney. [1] He also holds an LLM degree in constitutional and administrative law, a certificate in provincial and local government law, and a postgraduate certificate in corporate law. [2]

Political career

In 2008 Shackleton joined the Democratic Alliance's student organisation at the University of Pretoria. [2] He then became the leader of the party's student organisation at the university and joined the university's student representative council in 2010. [2] He also graduated from the DA's Young Leaders Programme. [2]

He became a councillor in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in 2014, representing the DA. [2] In July 2018, Shackleton was cited by News24 as one of "100 Young Mandelas" in the category "Resilience". [1]

Shackleton entered the National Assembly, the lower house of the South African parliament, on 11 September 2018 as a replacement for Ian Ollis. [3] [2] During his time in parliament, he was a member of the Standing Committee on Appropriations. [4]

For the 2019 elections, Shackleton was the 20th candidate on the DA's provincial list for the Gauteng Provincial Legislature election. He was also 81st on the DA's national list and 24th on the party's regional list for the National Assembly election. [5] At the election, he won a seat in the provincial legislature. [6] He served as the DA's Shadow MEC for Community Safety. He was also a member of the Public Accounts committee and the Community Safety portfolio committee. [4]

On 28 April 2022, Shackleton announced in an uploaded video posted on social media that he had resigned as a DA member and therefore as the DA's Gauteng North regional deputy chairperson and as a member of the provincial legislature. He joined ActionSA. Shackleton cited that "the regression of the DA as an inclusive home for all South Africans, and its abandonment of being an electoral alternative to the ANC" and the way the DA treated the community of Ward 96 in Tshwane, of which Shackleton is a resident, as the reasons for his resignation. Shackleton criticised Tshwane mayor Randall Williams and DA leaders Helen Zille and John Steenhuisen for campaigning in ward 96 ahead of the by-election on 4 May 2022 and said that they would "disappear" after the by-election. [7] The DA won the by-election on 4 May. [8]

The 2021 South African municipal elections were held on 1 November 2021, to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. It is the sixth municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, held every five years. The previous municipal elections were held in 2016. On 21 April 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the elections will be held on Wednesday, 27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022, ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.

He previously represented the FF+ in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019. Van Staden was a municipal councillor of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality from 2011 to 2014.

Crezane Bosch is a South African politician who is a Democratic Alliance Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for the Sixth Legislature. Prior to her election to the provincial legislature, she was a Tshwane councillor.

Audrey Winifred Morakane Ketlhoilwe Mosupyoe, known as Morakane Mosupyoe, is a South African politician serving as the Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation since October 2022. She was the MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment from October 2019 to December 2020 as well as well as the Gauteng MEC for Social Development from December 2020 until October 2022. Prior to her election to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in 2019, she served as a Tshwane city councillor. Mosupyoe is a member of the African National Congress.

Evelyn "Lindy" Wilson is a South African politician who has served as the provincial leader of the Democratic Alliance in Limpopo since 2023. A former councillor for ward 20 in the Polokwane Local Municipality, Wilson was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in 2014. She was then appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Social Development. After the 2019 election, she became the Shadow Deputy Minister of Health. Wilson was sworn in as a member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature in August 2023.

Bronwynn Anne Engelbrecht is a South African politician and pharmacist. A member of the Democratic Alliance, Engelbrecht served as the DA City of Tshwane ward 42 councillor until 2015 when she was appointed as a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces from Gauteng. After leaving parliament in 2019, Engelbrecht returned to the Tshwane city council as a DA PR councillor. In February 2021 she was sworn in as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

Gerhardus Willem Koornhof is a South African politician and economist who serves as the Parliamentary Counsellor to President Cyril Ramaphosa. When Ramaphosa served as deputy president, Koornhof was his parliament counsellor. An MP since 1994, Koornhof currently represents the African National Congress, though he previously represented United Democratic Movement between 1999 and 2003 and the National Party/New National Party before that.

Ntombi Valencia Khumalo is a South African politician and a member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2021. She is a member of the Democratic Alliance.

Abel Tau is a South African politician. He was the MMC for Human Settlements in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. He was a senior member of ActionSA. He was expelled from the party amid a sexual misconduct scandal.
