The House of Burgesses was the lower house of the Virginia General Assembly from 1619 to 1776. It existed during the colonial history of the United States when Virginia was a British colony. From 1642 to 1776,the House of Burgesses was an important feature of Virginian politics alongside the Crown-appointed colonial governor and the Virginia Governor's Council,the upper house of the General Assembly.
The Virginia General Assembly is the legislative body of the Commonwealth of Virginia,the oldest continuous law-making body in the Western Hemisphere,and the first elected legislative assembly in the New World. It was established on July 30,1619.
The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two houses of the Virginia General Assembly,the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years;unlike most states,these elections take place during odd-numbered years. The House is presided over by the Speaker of the House,who is elected from among the House membership by the Delegates. The Speaker is usually a member of the majority party and,as Speaker,becomes the most powerful member of the House. The House shares legislative power with the Senate,the upper house of the General Assembly. The House of Delegates is the modern-day successor to the colonial House of Burgesses,which first met at Jamestown in 1619. The House is divided into Democratic and Republican caucuses. In addition to the Speaker,there is a majority leader,majority whip,majority caucus chair,minority leader,minority whip,minority caucus chair,and the chairs of the several committees of the House.

The incumbent Lieutenant Governor,Republican Bill Bolling,had originally planned to run for Governor of Virginia in the 2013 gubernatorial election,but withdrew upon the entry of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.
Taylor Montgomery Mason is an American politician from Virginia. A member of the Democratic Party,Mason served as a member of the Virginia Senate for the 1st district from 2016 to 2024. From 2014 to 2016 he represented the 93rd district in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Eugene Beauharnais Sydnor Jr. was a Richmond department store owner,Chamber of Commerce executive,and politician. A member of the Byrd Organization,Sydnor served briefly in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly:from 1953 to 1955 in the House of Delegates and from 1955 until 1959 in the Virginia Senate. Both occurred during the period of Massive Resistance to the United States Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education.
Michael P. Mullin,known as Mike Mullin,is a former assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Hampton and an American politician of the Democratic Party. From 2016 to 2023 he represented (part-time) the 93rd district in the Virginia House of Delegates. He resigned on November 7,2023.
