Michelle "Mikey" Gardner, formerly Michelle Bolster, is an American softball coach and former player. Gardner is currently the head coach at Bowling Green. She was the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers softball team from 2009 until 2017. She previously served as the head coach at the University of Nevada from 2003 to 2008. She also served as an assistant softball coach at Arizona State (1999–2001) and Florida State (1995–1998).

Gardner was a right-handed pitcher for the Michigan Wolverines softball team from 1985 to 1988 and for the Raybestos Brakettes from 1994 to 1995. She was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year in 1988.

Early years

A native of Petersburg, Michigan, Gardner grew up in Monroe County, Michigan. She was an all-state softball player at Summerfield High School. She led Summerfield to a 26–1 record and a state championship in 1984. [1]

University of Michigan

Bolster played college softball for the Michigan Wolverines softball team from 1985 to 1988. She had two no-hitters during her Michigan career, one on May 3, 1985, and the other on May 4, 1988. During the 1988 season, she was Michigan's co-captain. That year, she compiled a 0.94 earned run average against Big Ten Conference opponents and was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and Michigan's Most Valuable Player; she was also named to the NFCA All-Mideast Region team in 1988. Professional softball

Bolster later played professional softball for the Raybestos Brakettes from 1994 to 1995. The Brakettes dominated the sport, winning 34 national championship games from 1958 to 1993 in the Women's World softball tournaments. In a 2000 profile on the Brakettes, The New York Times wrote that pitchers Joan Joyce, Bolster and others "made the team virtually unbeatable." [4]

Coaching career

Gardner was the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers softball from 2009 to 2017. In her first five seasons as the head coach at Indiana, she compiled a record of 108–153 (.414). [5]

Gardner previously served as the head coach at the University of Nevada from 2003 to 2008. She compiled a 187–176 record (.515)at Nevada. After leading Nevada to a 44–18 record in 2008, she was named the Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. [5] [6]

She also served as an assistant softball coach at Arizona State (1999–2001) and Florida State (1995–1998). [5]

On September 22, 2022, Gardner joined the Coastal Carolina softball staff as an assistant. [7]

On June 24, 2024, Gardner was announced as the new head coach of the Bowling Green softball program, returning to where she started her coaching career. [8]

Honors and Personal Life

Garner is married to William Gardner. They have one son and two daughters. [5]

On August 3, 2023, Gardner was announced as part of the five-member Class of 2023, to be inducted into the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame. [9]

Jennifer Lynn Allard is a former All-American softball player at the University of Michigan and the current head coach of the University of Pittsburgh softball team. Allard played for the Michigan Wolverines softball team from 1987–1990, where she was named an All-Big Ten player four straight years. She was a third baseman as a freshman and sophomore and a pitcher as a junior and senior. In 1989, Allard was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and a nominee for the Honda-Broderick Cup. She has been the head coach at Harvard since 1995, where she led the Crimson to its first Ivy League championship in 1992 and has followed with three more Ivy League crowns. In 1997, Allard told her team that she was a lesbian, becoming one of the first major college coaches to openly announce her homosexuality. In 2008, Allard was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor.

Carol Sue Hutchins is an American former softball coach. In 38 years as the head coach of Michigan Wolverines softball, (1985–2022), she won more games than more than any other coach in University of Michigan history in any sport, male or female with 1,684 wins. Hutchins had a career record of 1,707 wins, 551 losses, and five ties, for a .759 winning percentage. She led the Wolverines to their first NCAA softball championship in 2005.

The Michigan Wolverines softball team represents the University of Michigan in National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I competition. College softball became a varsity sport at the University of Michigan in 1978. Bonnie Tholl has been the head coach since 2023, following the retirement of longtime head coach Carol Hutchins. In 2005, Hutchins' team became the first Division I softball team since 1976 from east of the Mississippi River to win the Women's College World Series.

Lizabeth Gayle Blevins is a former college softball coach. She was the head coach at Indiana University Bloomington from 1980 to 1987 and at the University of Iowa from 1988 to 2010. With 1,245 wins in 31 years as a head coach, Blevins ranks 17th all-time in NCAA Division I softball coaching victories.

Michael Lee Teeter is a former American football player. He played college football as a middle guard for the University of Michigan from 1986 to 1989. He played professional football in the National Football League (NFL) as a special teams player for the Houston Oilers in 1993 and 1994. He also played during the spring of 1991 as a defensive lineman for the Frankfurt Galaxy in the World League of American Football and appeared in one game for the Minnesota Vikings in the fall of 1991.

Susan Enquist is a former softball player and coach. She played softball at UCLA under Sharron Backus from 1975 to 1978. She helped lead UCLA to its first national softball championship in the 1978 Women's College World Series and became UCLA's first All-American softball player.

Sierra Joy Romero is a Mexican American professional softball player. She formerly was a volunteer assistant softball coach for the Oregon Ducks softball team. She played college softball for Michigan from 2013 to 2016, where she set numerous records and was a four-time All-American. She holds the Big Ten Conference career Triple Crown, along with the total bases and slugging percentage records, simultaneously leading all of the NCAA Division I in runs scored and grand slams. She was the inaugural winner of both the espnW Softball Player of the Year in 2015 and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Year in 2016, when she also took home the Honda Sports Award Softball Player of the Year and USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year awards. She is one of nine NCAA players to hit .400 with 200 RBIs, 50 home runs and an .800 slugging percentage for her career and was named the #5 Greatest College Softball Player.

Jessica Merchant is an American softball coach and former softball player. She is currently the associate head coach of the Stanford Cardinal softball team. She previously served as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Golden Gophers and UMass Minutewomen. She played professional softball in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league for the New England Riptide for three seasons, and for the Connecticut Brakettes for one season. While playing for the Brakettes in 2006, she was named NPF Offensive Player of the Year.

Kelly Kovach Schoenly is an American softball coach and former softball player. She was the head softball coach at Ohio State from June 2012 to May 2024. She previously served as the head softball coach at Miami (Ohio) from 2006 to 2012. She has also been an assistant coach at Michigan and Penn State.

Gloria Soluk is a former American basketball and softball coach. She was the third head coach of the Michigan Wolverines women's basketball team. She held that position from 1977 to 1984 and compiled a record of 66–120. She was also the first head coach of the Michigan Wolverines softball team, compiling a 49–25 record from 1978–1980. She previously served as the head coach of the Wayne State University women's basketball team from 1974 to 1977 and had a 45–20 record in that position. She was also the girls' basketball coach at St. Ladislaus High School in Hamtramck, Michigan for nine years. She led St. Ladislaus to consecutive state championships in 1973 and 1974 and compiled a 114–13 record as a high school coach.

Bonita Lynn Tholl is a former American softball player, who is currently the head coach for the Michigan Wolverines softball team.

Kathy Arendsen is an American softball head coach and former professional player. Arendsen pitched for Holland Christian High School, where she won the state championship, before embarking on a successful collegiate and professional career. During her college years, Arendsen pitched for Texas Woman's University and California State University, Chico, where she led both teams to national championships. In recognition of her efforts, she received the 1978 Broderick Award as the nation's outstanding female athlete in softball. She was also selected to pitch for Team USA at the 1979 and 1983 Pan American Games, winning a gold and silver medal respectively.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Joan Moser</span> American field hockey player

Joan Elaine Moser is an American former field hockey and softball player. She played on the U.S. women's national field hockey team from 1967 to 1979 and was in the first class of inductees into the U.S. Field Hockey Association Hall of Fame. She also played for the world champion Raybestos Brakettes softball team.
