Michael Desmond Veivers AM (born 12 August 1939) was the Member for Southport from 1987 to 2001 and was Minister for Emergency Services and Sport in the Borbidge Government. [1] He had previously been a Rugby League international. [2]
Veivers was born at Southport in Queensland,Australia. [3] He attended St. Joseph's Nudgee College. He played football in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership for the Souths Magpies and represented Queensland and Australia. He also played in Sydney for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. [4] His cousin,Greg Veivers,was also a rugby league international. Another cousin,Tom Veivers,represented Australia in cricket and also became a Queensland politician.
Wayne James Bennett is an Australian professional rugby league football coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the National Rugby League (NRL). The Souths Logan Magpies,more commonly referred to by their former names Southern Suburbs Magpies,or South Brisbane Magpies,or often simply referred to as Souths,are a rugby league football club based in the southern suburbs of Brisbane,Australia. Jackson played club football in the Brisbane Rugby League for the Souths Magpies,before moving to the New South Wales Rugby League and playing for the Canberra Raiders,Brisbane Broncos and North Sydney Bears. He also played in the Rugby Football League for English club Leeds. Jackson worked in the media following his retirement in 1993,and died as the result of a drug overdose in 1997.
Peter Lawlor is an Australian former politician. He was the Labor Member for Southport in the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He served as Queensland Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading. Prior to his term in state parliament he previously served as a councillor on the Gold Coast City Council.

A by-election was held in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland seat of Southport on 20 June 1987. It was triggered by the death of sitting National Party member Doug Jennings on 9 April 1987,which until the death of Duncan Pegg in 2021,remained the most recent time a sitting Queensland MP has died. The seat was formerly a Liberal seat until 1980,and the by-election took place in the midst of the Joh for Canberra push. However,the campaign dwelled almost entirely on local matters.
