Microsoft Partner Network

Microsoft Partner Network or MPN, formerly known as the Microsoft Partner Program or MSPP, is Microsoft's partner network which is designed to make resources available to a wide variety of technology companies so they can build a business around Microsoft technologies.

The program consists of 100,000s of partners, vendors and service providers that build or sell solutions based on Microsoft products.^[1] It is difficult to ascertain the exact count, Microsoft blogs and channel magazines in 2017 and 2021 listed 100,000 partners in the US and 30,000 in the UK, but the worldwide number is probably in the millions.

These partners include systems integrators, original equipment manufacturers, independent software vendors, value-added resellers, telecommunications companies, Internet hosting services, marketing agencies, and resellers.

As of 2009, this business ecosystem generated $8.70 in revenue for partner companies for every $1 that Microsoft makes.^[2]^[3]^[4]

History

Microsoft Certified Solution Provider program was launched in 1992.^[5]
March 2000 – Ian Rogoff was named vice president of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Group.^[6]

In 2001, Microsoft decided to invest $500 million in partner-related activities.^[7]
November 2001 – Rosa Garcia replaces Ian Rogoff as head of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Group.^[6]
2002 – Allison L. Watson replaced Rosa Garcia as the head of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Group.^[8]
In 2003, Microsoft invested heavily in the partner program. Microsoft signed up 5,000 new ISVs to the Microsoft's ISV Empower Program. Microsoft upped its number of technical specialists on staff to assist partners, from 700 to 2,400 in one year. Microsoft revamped its employee compensation incentive plans, tying 60 percent of bonuses in most cases to partner and customer satisfaction.^[7] Microsoft also centralized its channel programs into the Microsoft Partner Program. This included consolidating OEMs, ISVs, VARs, integrators and consultants under one program.^[9]
2004 – Microsoft invested $1.7 billion in the partner program.^[8]
July 2010 – John Roskill replaced Allison Watson as the head of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Group.^[10] At that time, Microsoft investment in partners had grown to $5.2 billion. This includes $3.8 billion in channel incentives, $1 billion in partner marketing, $100 million in business investment fund, and $200 million in direct partner benefits through the Microsoft Partner Network.^[11]
Late 2010 – The Microsoft Partner Network officially launched and superseded the old Microsoft Partner Program.^[12]
2013 – In response to slow sales of the new Windows 8 line, Microsoft slashed Solutions Incentive Program payments.^[13]
Coming August 2019 – On-premises product support will no longer be available for Action Pack and competencies.^[14]

Current structure

Companies can apply to be a Microsoft Certified Partner. Partner resources include the Microsoft Pinpoint online directory, and the annual Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference.

Other individual certification programs such as the Microsoft Certified Professional are ways for individuals to become professionally certified in Microsoft products.

Novell, Inc. was an American software and services company headquartered in Provo, Utah, that existed from 1980 until 2014. Its most significant product was the multi-platform network operating system known as Novell NetWare.

ZDNET is a business technology news website owned and operated by Red Ventures. The brand was founded on April 1, 1991, as a general interest technology portal from Ziff Davis and evolved into an enterprise IT-focused online publication.

An independent software vendor (ISV), also known as a software publisher, is an organization specializing in making and selling software, as opposed to computer hardware, designed for mass or niche markets. This is in contrast to in-house software, which is developed by the organization that will use it, or custom software, which is designed or adapted for a single, specific third party. Although ISV-provided software is consumed by end users, it remains the property of the vendor.

Based in London, the magazine is owned by TechTarget; it formerly published as a weekly print magazine under Dennis Publishing Ltd and Reed Business Information for over 29 years. The last printed edition was published on Monday 28 March 2011, leaving only the online edition. The magazines prominent focus is news, analysis, and assessment of issues within the channel marketplace. It was available free to professionals who meet the circulation requirements with it being funded through revenue received from display and classified advertising. In the late 1990s, MicroScope remarked in its masthead “MicroScope – The No.1 news weekly for computer resellers and suppliers”.

Compellent Technologies, Inc., was an American manufacturer of enterprise computer data storage systems that provided block-level storage resources to small and medium sized IT infrastructures. The company was founded in 2002 and headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Compellent's flagship product, Storage Center, is a storage area network (SAN) system that combines a standards-based hardware platform and a suite of virtualized storage management applications, including automated tiered storage through a proprietary process called "DataProgression", thin provisioning and replication. The company developed software and products aimed at mid-size enterprises and sold through a channel network of independent providers and resellers. Dell acquired the company in February 2011, after which it was briefly a subsidiary known as Dell Compellent.

CHS Electronics is a former multinational distributor of microcomputer products, personal computers, peripherals, networking products, and software.

Microsoft Pinpoint was a searchable online directory of software applications and professional services based on Microsoft technologies. All software applications and services listed on the Pinpoint website were provided by independent information technology (IT) companies, including Microsoft Certified Partners, affiliated with the Microsoft Partner Network.

Outsourcery Plc, was a UK-based cloud services provider founded in 2007 by co-CEOs, Piers Linney and Simon Newton. They provided services primarily to small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The company went into administration in June 2016 when most of the business and assets were acquired by GCI Network Solutions Ltd.

Natech is a global technology company specializing in software and services for the financial sector.

"GreenButton was a software company based in New Zealand, specializing in facilitating the transition of independent software vendors (ISVs) and enterprises to cloud computing. Established in 2006 and headquartered in Wellington, New Zealand, GreenButton also operated additional offices in Palo Alto, California, and Seattle. On 2 May 2014, the company was acquired by Microsoft. Following the acquisition, GreenButton's technologies were incorporated into Microsoft's Azure cloud service."

The International Business Machines Corporation, nicknamed Big Blue, is an American multinational technology corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York and is present in over 175 countries. IBM is the largest industrial research organization in the world, with 19 research facilities across a dozen countries, and held the record for most annual U.S. patents generated by a business for 29 consecutive years from 1993 to 2021.
