Middle East College (MEC) is a private college[ citation needed ] based in Muscat, Oman. It is one of the leading higher education institution in the Sultanate of Oman, [3] with over 5,100 students. MEC is affiliated to Coventry University, UK. [4] It is located in the Knowledge Oasis Muscat.

Middle East College has undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the disciplines of engineering, business, and technology. MEC has partnerships with Microsoft IT Academy (ITA), [5] Oracle Academy Initiative Program, Cisco Networking Academy Program, EC-Council Scholarship, [6] SAP, Linux Professional Institute and Information Technology Authority, Oman.

History

The Middle East College was founded in 2002 by Dr. Abdullah Saif Ahmed Al Sabahy, [7] and Mr. Lefeer Muhamed, [8] in association with Sultan's Special Forces Pension Fund (SSFPF).[ citation needed ]

The Education in Oman is provided free of charge up to end of secondary education, though attendance is not mandatory at any level. In 1970 there were only three formal schools with 900 students in the whole state. Oman's national educational program expanded rapidly during the 1970s and the 1980s, with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia sending teachers on its own expense during that time period. In 2006–2007 about 560,000 students attended 1053 public schools. The number of students in private schools is about 65,000. There are also extensive programmes to combat adult illiteracy. Sultan Qaboos University, the only national university near Muscat, was founded in 1986, and in 2006 it had 13,500 students. The Human Development Report found the literacy rate to be 93.0% in adults, up from 54.7% in 1990. For the same period, the youth literacy rate increased from 85.6 to 97.3%. Public expenditure on education was reported to be 4.6% of GDP and 26.1% of total government spending.

University Of Technology And Applied Sciences (UTAS) is a public university operated in 9 governorates. It has 11 different branches spread over the different part of the country. It was the first Higher Education institution in Oman. Currently, it is the largest higher education institution in Oman, catering to over 46,000 students studying in various programs.

The Guilin University of Technology has situated in the city of Guilin in Guangxi, China. It currently has more than 19,000 students. Waljat College of Applied Sciences (WCAS) (Arabic: كليةولجات للعلوم التطبيقية) is one of Oman's leading higher education institutes. It was established in October 2001 by H.E. Dr. Omar Bin Abdul Muniem Al Zawawi in academic partnership with Birla Institute of Technology (BIT, Mesra), India, one of India's premier universities. It is the second International Centre of BIT, Mesra. It provides education in the specialized branches of Engineering, Information Technology and Business Administration.

Sohar University was established in 2001 as the first private university in Oman. It was granted degree awarding powers by the Oman Ministry of Higher Education, with the authority to provide programs and courses whose successful completion leads to academic awards.

Gautam Buddha University ("GBU") is a university established by the Uttar Pradesh Gautam Buddha University Act 2002 and came into existence in 2008. Situated across two locations in Dubai Knowledge Park and Dubai International Academic City, the campus was inaugurated in 2005 and currently has over 4,500 students from over 110 studying across both locations. Dr Cedwyn Fernandes is Director of Middlesex University Dubai, alongside his duties as Pro-Vice Chancellor of Middlesex University London.
