The Midland Uruguay Railway was the second most important of five rail lines in Uruguay's early rail history. The other four systems were the Central Uruguay Railway Co., the North Western of Uruguay, the Uruguay Northern, and the Uruguay East Coast Railway. [1] The Midland Uruguay Railway Co., Ltd. was registered In London In 1887 with capital of $3,000,000. [2]

The Midland opened on August 15, 1889 with the 318 kilometres (198 mi) line between Paso de los Toros and Salto. It ran for 525 kilometres (326 mi) on Standard gauge. The branch from Algorta/Fray Bentos was opened in its entirety August 17, 1911. Another 58 kilometres (36 mi) from Piedra Sola were opened on April 10, 1913. In 1936, there were 22 steam locomotives, one railcar, 20 coaches and 484 goods wagons. [3] It remained independent until 1949. The railway ran northward and westward. The main line ran for 315 km (196 mi), passing through Tres Arboles, Algorta, and Paysandú, before terminating at Salto. [1] [4]

All the Uruguayan lines start from Montevideo, connecting the cities of Paysandú, Salto, Rivera and Río Branco. The rest of the lines (closed) connected the capital city with Fray Bentos, Cuareim, Artigas, Km. 329, Melo, La Paloma and Colonia del Sacramento.

Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR) was a railway company operating in India from 1879 to 1950. It was owned by the Nizams of Hyderabad State, and its full name was His Exalted Highness, The Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway. The company began with a line built privately by the HEH, the Nizam, which was owned and operated by the company under a guarantee from the Hyderabad State, much to the dismay of the British authorities. Capital for the line was raised by issuing redeemable mortgage debentures. The Nizam's railway was eventually consolidated with the Hyderabad-Godavari Valley Railway (HGVR). In 1951, both the NGSR and the HGVR were nationalised and merged into Indian Railways.

The Central Uruguay Railway (CUR) was one of the five original rail systems in Uruguay. The other four were the Midland Uruguay Railway Co., the North Western of Uruguay, the Uruguay Northern, and the Uruguay East Coast Railway. CUR, including its leased and worked lines, was considered the most important system. It controlled about 1,560 kilometres (970 mi) of track. The system operated four sections: the Central Uruguay Railway Original Line, 436 km (271 mi); the Northern Extension Railway, 298 km (185 mi); the Eastern Extension Railway, 501 km (311 mi); and the Western Extension Railway, 340 km (211 mi).

The Brazil Great Southern Railway (BGS) was founded in 1877. It was developed by Jose Candido Gomes who, with English investors, created the Brazil Great Southern Railway Company Limited. The company was registered under the English Companies Act on January 11, 1883. Its office was located at No. 14 Queen Victoria Street, London. Its directors included Major-General J. P. Beadle, D. M. Fox, H. A. Cowper, Charles Neate, Charles Sanderson.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Montevideo Waterworks Company</span>

The Montevideo Waterworks Company, Ltd. was a British company, operating in Montevideo, Uruguay. Organized in 1879, its offices were at 61 Moorgate, London, England. The company was founded to take over a concession granted by the government of Uruguay for the construction of the necessary works for supplying the city with water derived from the Santa Lucía River. The point on that river at which the water was taken was 55 kilometres (34 mi) from the city, and after being treated with aluminoferric salt, the water was filtered and pumped through a steel main to the service reservoirs, 19 km (12 mi), on a rocky eminence at Las Piedras, at an elevation of about 90 m (300 ft) above the city. The company served nearly 35,000 houses, with the daily consumption averaging 140 litres (120 imp qt) per capita. There were six settling reservoirs, nine sand filters, two reservoirs, and five distributing reservoirs. The total extent of water mains was about 550 km (340 mi). The company assets were sold to the Uruguayan government in 1948.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Société des Chemins de Fer Vicinaux du Congo</span>

The Société des Chemins de Fer Vicinaux du Congo, known as CVC or Vicicongo, was a railway company that operated the narrow gauge Vicicongo line and provided trucking services in the northeast Belgian Congo, and then in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between 1924 and 1974. It provided transport for agricultural goods produced in the northeast that were shipped on the Congo River to Léopoldville (Kinshasa). After independence in 1960 there were civil disturbances and the railway was poorly maintained. The company was taken over by the state in 1974. Later there were further disturbances in which the stations were destroyed and the rolling stock used as a source of metal. The track is decrepit and no longer usable.
