Midlum (West Frisian : Mullum) is a village in north Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Harlingen, Friesland and has a population of around 645. [1]

Transportation

Midlum-Herbaijum railway station was on the Harlingen - Stiens line of the North Friesland Railway, which opened on 1 October 1903 to Tzummarum and Harlingen on 2 May 1904. The passenger service ceased on 15 May 1936. Closure of the line to Harlingen was on 11 January 1938 and to Tzummarum on 7 December 1961.

Leeuwarden railway station

The station, which opened on 27 October 1863, is on the Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway, the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway and the Leeuwarden–Stavoren railway. Leeuwarden was also the terminus of the North Friesland Railway which served Anjum and Harlingen via Stiens. Behind the station is a stabling point for many trains. Train services are operated by Arriva. 600m west of this station is Harlingen Haven, the terminus of the line. From 1904–1935, Harlingen was the terminus of the Stiens-Harlingen railway line. From Harlingen Haven there are ferry connections to Terschelling and Vlieland.

Almenum Village in Friesland, Netherlands

Almenum is a historic locality in the northern Netherlands, near Midlum, Friesland the site of the first Christian church in Friesland. Saint Boniface set up a local church in the locality in 754. The location of the church is on the Terp of Almenum, a mound of earth about five meters high. Almenum is named after the place where someone called "Allaman" lived. The -um suffix is derived from the West Frisian word "hiem" meaning "home". An alternative explanation for the name of the locality is that it originally meant common lands for grazing cattle. In Icelandic this kind of land still uses the term "almenningurheim".
