Carlos Manuel Martins do Vale César,GCC is a Portuguese politician and former President of the Regional Government of the Portuguese autonomous region of the Azores. He currently serves as member of the Assembly of the Republic,member of the Council of State and President of the Socialist Party.
António Luís Santos da Costa is a Portuguese lawyer and politician who served as the 118th prime minister of Portugal from 2015 to 2024,presiding over the XXI (2015–2019),XXII (2019–2022) and XXIII Constitutional Governments (2022–2024). Following this,Costa has been President of the European Council since December 2024. Costa's near 9-year tenure as Prime Minister is the second longest,with Costa also being the longest serving politician in government functions,in Portuguese democracy,and the longest of any Iberian Peninsula national leader in the 21st century.
Francisco JoséPereira de Assis Miranda is a Portuguese politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Socialist Party. He was part of the Party of European Socialists from 2004 to 2009,and again from 2014 until 2019. He is also a former mayor of Amarante,having been in office from 1989 to 1995,and member of the Assembly of Republic on two occasions,the first from 1995 to 2004 and the second from 2009 to 2014.

In the Portuguese government,he served as Minister of Internal Administration in 1978,Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1983 to 1985 and from 1995 to 2002,and Minister of National Defence in 1999. From 2005 to 2011 he was President of the Assembly of the Republic.

Local elections in Portugal were held on 26 September 2021. The election consisted of three separate elections in the 308 Portuguese municipalities:the election for the Municipal Chamber,whose winner is automatically elected mayor,similar to first-past-the-post (FPTP);another election for the Municipal Assembly;and an election for the Parish Assembly,whose winner is elected parish president. This last one was held separately in the more than 3,000 parishes around the country. In the 2021 election,12.3 percent of incumbent mayors,38 to be precise,were barred from running for another term:23 from the PS,11 from the PSD,3 from CDU and one from the CDS–PP.
Regional elections were held in Madeira on 24 September 2023,to determine the composition of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The election replaced all 47 members of the Madeira Assembly,and the new members will then elect the President of the Autonomous Region.
Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Portugal in January 2026. The election will elect the successor to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa,who is barred from running for a third term.
The 2022 Portuguese Social Democratic Party leadership election was held on 28 May 2022. If no candidate achieved more than 50% of the votes in the first round,a second round would be held between the two most voted candidates in the first round on 4 June 2022,however,as only two candidates were on the ballot,Luís Montenegro and Jorge Moreira da Silva,a second round was not necessary. Nearly 45,000 party members,out of more than 85,000 active members,were registered to vote.

Santos previously held positions in the Portuguese Government under António Costa,first as Secretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs,from November 2015 to February 2019,and afterwards as Minister of Infrastructure and Housing,from February 2019 to December 2022.

The elections were called in November 2023 after Prime Minister António Costa's resignation following an investigation around alleged corruption involving the award of contracts for lithium and hydrogen businesses.

The leadership ballot was called after Prime Minister and Socialist Party Secretary-General António Costa resigned from office on 7 November 2023. The winner of this election led the Socialist Party into the 2024 legislative election.
Fernando de Carvalho Ruas is a Portuguese economist and politician from the Social Democratic Party. He is currently the Mayor of Viseu,since 2021. He was also Mayor of Viseu between 1989 and 2013.
The next Madeiran regional election will be held on or before October 2028,the composition of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The election will replace all 47 members of the Madeira Assembly,and the new members will then elect the President of the Autonomous Region.
