Michael Beard (born July 22,1953) is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives,who retired in 2014. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota,he represented District 55A,which includes portions of Scott County in the southwestern part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Communities in the district include Shakopee,Jackson Township,and Louisville Township. He is also a local businessman and newspaper publisher. [1] He is now also co-chair of a coal energy advocacy group,Coalition for a Secure Energy Future [2] and serves as Scott County Commissioner,District 3. [3]
Beard graduated from Bethany College of Missions in Bloomington,earning his BA in Bible Missions. He later attended entrepreneurial classes at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul. He was the owner and operator of Macalester Park Public Company from 1987 to 1995,and has been publisher of the Minnesota Christian Chronicle newspaper since 1994. He was a member of the Shakopee City Council from 1991 to 1995,and was a member of the Minnesota Regional Transit Board from 1993 to 1995. [1] [4]
Beard was first elected in 2002,and was re-elected every two years since then until retiring in 2014.
On May 21,2011,he joined the House Republican Majority in voting for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and woman. [5] On May 7,2012,he voted in favor of controversial House File 1485,the bill authorizing construction of a new Vikings Stadium. [6]
Beard announced on March 18,2014 that he would not seek re-election. [7]
Scott County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census,the population was 150,928. Its county seat is Shakopee. Shakopee is also the largest city in Scott County,the twenty-third-largest city in Minnesota,and the sixteenth-largest Twin Cities suburb. The county was organized in 1853 and named in honor of General Winfield Scott. Scott County is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington,MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a member of the Metropolitan Council,and shares many of the council's concerns about responsible growth management,advocating for progressive development concepts such as clustering,open-space design,and the preservation of open space and rural/agricultural land.
Collin Clark Peterson is an American accountant,politician,and lobbyist who served as the U.S. representative for Minnesota's 7th congressional district from 1991 to 2021. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL). he was chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture from 2019 to 2021 and previously holding the office from 2007 to 2011;he had been ranking member from 2011 to 2019 and 2005 to 2007. Peterson was the most senior U.S. Representative from Minnesota and the dean of Minnesota's congressional delegation. In 2020,Peterson was defeated by Michelle Fischbach,ending his 30-year tenure in the United States House of Representatives. In 2022,Peterson registered as a federal lobbyist after opening an eponymous consulting firm.
Richard Michael Nolan is an American politician and businessman who served as the U.S. representative from Minnesota's 8th congressional district from 2013 to 2019. He previously served as the U.S. representative from Minnesota's 6th congressional district between 1975 and 1981 and was also a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1969 until 1973.
