Mike Costello is a British sports broadcaster. He is the main boxing commentator for DAZN, having previously worked at BBC Radio for 45 years.

Early life

Costello was born in April 1960 and grew up in Camberwell in south London. [1] Both his parents were Irish immigrants, living in London before they met. [1] An amateur boxer, he also worked as a boxing trainer, training Adam Booth [2] and Henry Akinwande [3] before choosing to focus on his broadcasting career.

Career

Costello began his career at the BBC in 1979 as a filing clerk in the accounts department. Due to a restructure, he moved to the accounts department within the BBC World Service, where later he became a runner and then a Broadcast Assistant on the BBC World Service sports desk. [3] Costello reported on cricket for the BBC World Service in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the MRF World Series in Pakistan in 1989 and England's tour of India of 1992-93. [3] He also reported on athletics, including at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. [3]

Costello's first commentary was at the 1995 World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. [3] At the Commonwealth Games in 2002, after John Rawling lost his voice, Costello was asked to commentate live over multiple nights. [3] After John Rawling moved to ITV in 2005, Costello became lead commentator for boxing and athletics across BBC's domestic radio output. [3]

In June 2021, Costello signed a deal with DAZN to commentate on their coverage of boxing, ending his long tenure covering boxing with the BBC. [4] It is not known if Costello will continue to cover athletics for the BBC, however, he commentated on the state funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II on 19th September 2022 for BBC Radio. [3]

Richie Woodhall is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1990 to 2000. He held the WBC super-middleweight title from 1998 to 1999, as well as the Commonwealth middleweight title from 1992 to 1995, and the European middleweight title from 1995 to 1996. Bower commentated on New Zealand's historic draw with Italy and Argentina's 4–1 win over South Korea amongst others. He can also be heard on TNT Sports covering the Europa League, Serie A, and the Bundesliga, NBCSN covering the Premier League in the US, and ESPN covering international matches. He is the lead presenter on world feed Premier League Productions and presents Premier League football for Amazon Prime Video UK. Previous work includes Setanta Sports, ESPN UK, and MUTV.

John Rawling is a British boxing, track and field, darts and yachting commentator, currently working for BT Sport, ITV and Talksport. He has become known as one of the best known voices of boxing commentary. With BT, John commentates alongside former World Super-Middleweight champion Richie Woodhall, while former World Cruiserweight champion Glenn McCrory is his co-commentator with Talksport. On ITV darts broadcasts, John commentates with Chris Mason, Stuart Pyke, Dan Dawson and Alan Warriner-Little, while Mason and Paul Nicholson are alongside him for Talksport darts coverage. John also commentates on Paralympic sports for Channel 4. He was the lead commentator for Channel 4 in their award-winning coverage of the 2012 Paralympics in London and the 2011 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Korea.
