Mike Drummond

Mike Drummond is a New Zealand sailor and yacht designer who is a member of the America's Cup Hall of Fame.

Drummond was born in Christchurch and joined New Zealand Challenge before the 1987 America's Cup and he then helped to design, and sail on, KZ 1 during the 1988 America's Cup. [1] He remained with the team for the 1992 America's Cup. [2]

He joined Team New Zealand and was part of the design and sailing teams when they won the 1995 America's Cup. He sailed in one race. [3]

Drummond was a navigator and sailed in two races during the 2000 America's Cup as navigator and also sailed in the 2003 America's Cup campaign. [4]

Drummond then joined Alinghi for the 2007 America's Cup.

He later joined Oracle Racing as their design director and was involved in designing USA 17 for the 2010 America's Cup and the AC45 class for the 2013 America's Cup. [5]

In 2010, he was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame. [6] [7]

Drummond also designs and sails his own International A-class catamaran. [8] He competed in the 2014 World Championships in Takapuna. [9] In 2017 he assisted the NZ Extreme Sailing Team in the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series. [10]

The America's Cup is a sailing competition and the oldest international competition still operating in any sport. America's Cup match races are held between two sailing yachts: one from the yacht club that currently holds the trophy and the other from the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. Bertarelli had raced several smaller yachts named Alinghi previously, but 2003 was his first attempt at the America's Cup. Alinghi challenged for and won the 2003 America's Cup in Auckland New Zealand and successfully defended it at the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia, Spain. Alinghi lost the America's Cup to the Golden Gate Yacht Club and their team BMW Oracle Racing in a Deed of Gift match in Valencia, Spain in February 2010.

The America's Cup Hall of Fame, located at the Herreshoff Marine Museum of Bristol, Rhode Island, USA, honors individuals for outstanding achievement in the America's Cup sailing competition. Candidates eligible for consideration include skippers, afterguard, crew, designers, builders, organizers, syndicate managers, supporters, chroniclers, race managers, and other individuals of merit. A selection committee of twenty-two members consisting of former America's Cup participants, yachting historians, and yachting journalists annually selects a class of one to four inductees. Rolex, Louis Vuitton, and Prada have been sponsors of the Hall of Fame's induction ceremonies.

The 2017 America's Cup was the 35th staging of the America's Cup yacht race. The challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand, won by a score of 7 to 1 over the defender, Oracle Team USA. It was held on the Great Sound in Bermuda from June 17 to June 26. The races were conducted using hydrofoiling AC50 America's Cup Class yachts, which are slightly larger than the AC45F yachts used in the 2015–16 America's Cup World Series.

The 2017 Louis Vuitton Challenger's Trophy was a sailing competition held to determine the challenger in the 2017 America's Cup.
