Mike Hanks is an American college basketball coach. He was head coach for Saint Leo University, Manchester Giants, University of South Alabama and Samford University. He also served as an assistant under Bob Knight at Indiana University.

Coaching career

Indiana University

Hanks served as a graduate assistant basketball coach for Indiana University from 1975 to 1976. Indiana was coached by the Hall of Fame coach, Bob Knight. Indiana won the NCAA tournament, compiling an undefeated season.

University of Mississippi

Hanks served as an assistant basketball coach for the Ole Miss Rebels and head coach Bob Weltlich from 1976 to 1981. During this time Ole Miss competed in the school's first-ever postseason NIT Tournament in school history (1980), first-ever NCAA Tournament (1981) and won the school's first-ever and only SEC Tournament Championship (1981).

Samford

Hanks was head coach at Samford from 1981 to 1984. During his tenure as head coach, Samford won 20 games for the first time in school history (1984). Hanks was named as the Trans America Conference Coach of the Year and the Birmingham Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year (1984). He compiled a 46–38 (.548) record. [2]

This was a Pre-Olympic (1984) team selected to compete in tournaments in Korea, South Pacific and versus the Pan American Basketball Team in Manhattan, Kansas. The USA Team won championships in both tournaments.

South Alabama

From 1984 to 1987, Hanks prowled the sidelines as head coach at South Alabama and garnered a 45–43 (.511) record.

In March 1987, Mike Hanks refused to resign as South Alabama's basketball coach with two years remaining in his contract and refused other options offered by the school. He was dismissed by Joe Gottfried, the school's athletic director. Hanks was in the third year of a five-year contract. In Hanks's three seasons at South Alabama his teams finished 15–13, 16–16 and 14–14. [3]

Cocodrilos de Caracas

Hanks served as head coach and director of sports for the Crocodiles of Caracas, Venezuela. He compiled a franchise record wins (39–16), league championship and tournament championship (1992). The Cocodrilos were selected to compete in the South American Cup (1993)

Manchester Giants

The owners of the British Basketball League Manchester Giants were putting together a new look team and brought in United States college coach Mike Hanks for the start of the '94–95 season. Although they only finished fourth and fifth in Coach Hanks' two seasons, the Giants were play-off runners-up, losing the Wembley Championship Final to Worthing by a narrow 77–73 (1995). [4] The Giants were semi-finalist, Wembley Championship (1996). The Giants were selected for the European Cup in both 1995 and advancing to the second round (1996)

Saint Leo

Hanks distinguished himself as the school's most successful basketball coach, setting school records for the most wins in a season, highest conference finish and most wins to start a season. For five seasons (1996–2001) Hanks was the head coach at Saint Leo and compiled a 66–70 (.485) record. Hanks tendered his resignation in March 2001. [5]

US National Team

On temporary assignment from Samford, Hanks served as an assistant coach to then Texas coach, Bob Weltlich for the US national team in the 1982 FIBA World Championship, winning the silver medal in Cali, Colombia. [6]

In 1983 Hanks coached the USA Select Basketball Team to a 12–0 record in Asia. [7]

The Dayton Flyers men's basketball team is a college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) representing the University of Dayton in Ohio. The Flyers play their home games at University of Dayton Arena. The Flyers are coached by Anthony Grant who is in his fourth season. In March 2020, Dayton was ranked #3 in the AP Top 25 Poll, its highest ranking since the 1955–56 season when it was ranked #2. The Flyers have never been ranked #1, but Dayton did receive a lone first place vote in the final AP poll of the 2019-2020 season.

The South Alabama Jaguars men's basketball program has competed in the Sun Belt Conference since 1978 when the league was formed. Since 1968, the Jaguars have compiled an overall record of 694–507 (.580). Ronnie Arrow returned as head coach in 2007, succeeding John Pelphrey after the 2006–07 season. In his three seasons succeeding Pelphrey, Coach Arrow was 63–34 (64.9%), and is 177–127 (58.2%) all time at South Alabama. He retired December 19, 2012 and was replaced by Jeff Price on an interim basis. On March 25, 2013, Matthew Graves was named as the new head coach of the Jaguars. On March 8, 2018, Graves was fired after 5 seasons after a 65–96 record with no postseason appearances. Exactly 1 week later, the Jaguars hired former Nicholls State head coach Richie Riley for the job. In Coach Riley's first year at the helm of the Jaguars, he led the program to their first non-losing season since 2013, finishing the year at 17-17.

Nell Fortner American basketball player and coach

Nell Fortner is the current women's college basketball coach at Georgia Tech. She is most well known for leading the 2000 Olympics team to a gold medal. She has received numerous awards including the 1997 National Coach of the Year, the 2000 USA Basketball Coach of the Year and the 2008 SEC Coach of the Year. In April 2018, she was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

North Alabama Lions mens basketball

The North Alabama Lions men's basketball team represents University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Bennie Seltzer is an American college basketball coach who most recently served as the interim head coach of the Evansville Purple Aces team following the firing of Walter McCarty. Seltzer is the former head coach of the Samford Bulldogs, a position to which he was hired on April 5, 2012. Previously, he was hired in April 2008 by new Indiana Hoosiers head coach Tom Crean, who brought him and fellow assistant Tim Buckley over from his staff at Marquette. Following his dismissal from Samford, Seltzer was hired by Crean to be Indiana's Director of Player Performance.

FIU Panthers mens basketball

The FIU Panthers men's basketball team represents Florida International University in Miami, Florida. The school's team currently competes in Conference USA. They are led by head coach Jeremy Ballard and play their home games at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
