Mike King is an American businessman and former Kansas Secretary of Transportation.
Originally from Hesston,Kansas,King owned King Enterprise Group,a central Kansas construction company,for more than 20 years. He sold the company in 2012 after being named Secretary of Transportation. Secretary King earned a degree in building construction from John Brown University in 1981.
King led the Kansas Department of Transportation and its 2,400 employees after being named Secretary of Transportation by Governor Sam Brownback in March 2012,officially taking office on April 2,2012. His duties expanded in July 2013 when he also became the Director of the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA).
Safety and support of economic development initiatives were his priorities during his tenure as secretary. As a member of the Governor's Growth Team,the secretary worked closely with other state agencies to help Kansas seize economic opportunities.
As KTA Director,Secretary King's goals were to grow ridership,improve customer service and facilitate regional electronic tolling interoperability.
In August 2014,Secretary King was elected to a one-year term as president of the Mid America Association of State Transportation Officials (MAASTO). As head of the 10-state consortium,Secretary King focused on the seamless,state-to-state movement of freight in the region.
King left office on July 15,2016 and was succeeded by Interim Secretary Richard Carlson,a former Kansas State Representative.
He and his wife,Peggy,have four children.
Samuel Dale Brownback is an American attorney,politician,diplomat and member of the Republican Party who served as the United States Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom from 2018 to 2021. Brownback previously served as the Secretary of Agriculture of Kansas (1986–93),as the U.S. representative for Kansas's 2nd congressional district (1995–96),as a United States senator from Kansas (1996–2011) and the 46th governor of Kansas (2011–18). He also ran for the Republican nomination for President in 2008.
U.S. Route 400 is a 481.306-mile-long (774.587 km) mostly east–west U.S. Highway,commissioned in 1994. The highway's western terminus is in Granada,Colorado,at an intersection with US 385. Interstate 470 (I-470) is a 13.72-mile (22.08 km) loop highway that bypasses the downtown area of Topeka,Kansas. I-470 begins at an interchange with I-70 in western Topeka and heads generally southeast,running concurrent with U.S. Route 75 (US-75). The concurrency with US-75 ends 5.74 miles (9.24 km) later at the Burlingame Road interchange. I-470 becomes part of the Kansas Turnpike at its junction with I-335. From there,the highway heads generally northeast through the southeastern sections of Topeka. After traveling 7.03 miles (11.31 km) as the Kansas Turnpike,I-470 reaches its eastern terminus at I-70. The highway has annual average daily traffic values as high as 43,000 west of Gage Boulevard to as low as 10,370 near the eastern terminus. As an Interstate Highway,I-470 is a part of the United States National Highway System. The non-turnpike portions of the highway are maintained by the Kansas Department of Transportation,while the turnpike portion is maintained by the Kansas Turnpike Authority.
K-26 is a 3.601-mile-long (5.795 km) state highway located entirely within Cherokee County,Kansas. It runs from an intersection with U.S. Route 166 (US-166) and US-400 northwest of the Missouri/Kansas/Oklahoma tripoint north to K-66 in Galena. The National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) is a biosafety level 4 research laboratory in Manhattan,Kansas,operated by the United States Department of Agriculture. The facility is slated to open in October 2021,combatting biological threats involving human,zoonotic,and foreign animal diseases,replacing the aging Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) on Plum Island,New York. The primary research tenants of the facility will be the Agriculture Research Service (USDA-ARS) and Animal Plant Health Inspection Service,Veterinary Services (USDA-APHIS-VS). Construction on the 574,000-square-foot (53,300 m2) facility officially began in May 2015,and was scheduled to be fully completed by May 2021,however the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has delayed scheduled commissioning to October 2021. Operations will be fully transferred from the Plum Island facility by 2023. When fully operational,the facility will employ between 250 and 350 people. The facility is a constituent member of the Biosafety Level 4 Zoonotic Laboratory Network. It is currently led by Alfonso Clavijo.
K-150 is a 16.645-mile (26.788 km) east–west state highway in the U.S. state of Kansas. The route begins at a roundabout with U.S. Route 56 (US-56) and US-77 northeast of Marion and runs east to a junction with US-50 southwest of Elmdale. It runs through the Flint Hills region of Kansas,and is a two-lane road its entire length. There are no cities or towns along the road,but it provides a direct link for traffic from Marion,Hillsboro,McPherson and points west to Emporia and the Kansas Turnpike.
K-256 is an approximately 5-mile-long (8.0 km) east–west state highway in the U.S. state of Kansas. The highways western terminus is at U.S. Route 56 (US-56) northwest of Marion and the eastern terminus is at US-77 east of Marion. K-256 directly serves the city of Marion,the county seat of Marion County. The highway is a two-lane road its entire length. The section of K-256 within the city of Marion is maintained by the city.
