Michael McGrath (born August 22,1947) is an American lawyer and judge who has served as the chief justice of the Montana Supreme Court since 2009. He also served as the Attorney General of Montana from 2000 to 2008. [1] He is a veteran of the United States Air Force.
A native of Butte,Montana,McGrath graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Arts in business administration in 1970. [2] Then he served in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1972. [2] He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1975. [1] He is the recipient of the 2021 Gonzaga Law Medal. [3]
McGrath worked in Reno,Nevada as a Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyer Fellow from 1975 to 1976. [1] He became Montana's Assistant Attorney General in 1977 and served until 1982. [4]
He served as County Attorney for Lewis and Clark County for five terms spanning 1982 to 2000. [1] In his eighteen years as a prosecutor,McGrath focused on family violence issues,including domestic abuse and sexual assault of children. He ran an unsuccessful campaign against Marc Racicot for Attorney General in 1988. [4]
McGrath defeated Jim Rice for Montana Attorney General in 2000. [4] He won a second term in 2004. [1] As Attorney General,he focused on methamphetamine prevention and natural resource and land issues. [4] In 2005,Montana was ranked as fifth worst for meth abuse among US states. [5]
McGrath campaigned against Ron Waterman for Chief Justice of the Montana Supreme Court in 2008. [6] He took office in January 2009 on the seat vacated by Karla Gray. He ran unopposed in 2016 for another eight year term. McGrath stated he would not run for re-election in 2024. [6]
Besides his legal career,McGrath ran for Governor of Montana in 1992. [4] He lost in the Democratic primary to former State Representative Dorothy Bradley.
He is a former chair of the Conference of Western Attorneys General and served as president of the Montana County Attorneys' Association.
He and his wife Joy have two sons and five grandchildren. [3]
Marc Racicot is an American attorney,lobbyist,and former Republican politician who served as the 21st Governor of Montana from 1993 until 2001. After leaving office,Racicot worked as a lobbyist for the law firm Bracewell &Giuliani. His notable clients included Enron,Burlington Northern Santa Fe,and the Recording Industry Association of America.
Karla Marie Gray was an American attorney and judge who served as the chief justice of the Montana Supreme Court;she was the first woman to serve as Chief Justice and to be elected to the Montana Supreme Court.
James A. Rice is an American attorney,judge,and politician. He is one of the six Associate Justices currently on the Montana Supreme Court. Rice was initially appointed by Governor Judy Martz in 2001. His current term extends to 2030.

A close election ensued,but in the end,Racicot ended up defeating Bradley to win his first of two terms as governor. While on the same ballot,Democrat presidential candidate Bill Clinton won the state of Montana,and eventually won the 1992 United States presidential election.

Dirk M. Sandefur is an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court. His term began on January 2,2017. He served for eight years as a criminal and civil Deputy Attorney for Cascade County,Montana,before being elected a judge on the 8th Judicial District of the Montana District Court in 2002. He ran for and won election to the Montana Supreme Court in 2016.
William Edward Hunt,Sr. was an American soldier,lawyer,and jurist. He served as the County Attorney for Liberty County,Montana,and later as the mayor of Chester,Montana. During his tenure as mayor,he founded the Montana Consumers Council. From 1970 to 1975,he served as the Director of the Montana Aeronautics Commission. He was appointed the first Montana Workers' Compensation Court judge in July 1975,organizing the court and serving until August 1981. He won a nonpartisan election as an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court in 1984,and served from January 2,1985,until his retirement on December 31,2000.
Ingrid G. Gustafson is an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court. She was appointed in December 2017 by Governor Steve Bullock to fill the seat of retiring Justice Mike Wheat. She ran unopposed in 2018 for the remainder of Wheat's term. In 2022,Gustafson ran against James Brown,winning an eight year term.
