Michael Joseph Mottau (born March 19, 1978) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted in the seventh round, 182nd overall, by the New York Rangers in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
Mottau was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but grew up in Avon, Massachusetts.
Mottau played four years of college hockey at Boston College, and was the recipient of the Hobey Baker Award for top men's collegiate hockey player during his senior season. He made his National Hockey League debut with the Rangers during the 2000–01 season. He played nineteen games with the Rangers over two seasons, and four with the Calgary Flames during the 2002–03 season. Mottau played four seasons in the American Hockey League before returning to the NHL in the 2007–08 season with the New Jersey Devils. On September 28, 2010, Mottau signed a two-year deal with the New York Islanders. [1]
On February 27, 2012, Mottau was traded with Brian Rolston to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Yannick Riendeau and Marc Cantin. [2]
With the 2012–13 NHL lockout negating his chance of an NHL contract, Mottau was signed to a professional try-out deal with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL on December 7, 2012. [3] Mottau produced 7 assists in 16 games before he was released at the conclusion of the lockout to sign a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 13, 2013. [4]
On July 5, 2013 the Florida Panthers Executive VP & General Manager Dale Tallon announced that the club has agreed to terms with D Mike Mottau on a one-year, two way contract. [5]
On August 19, 2014, Mottau announced his retirement. [6] Following his retirement, Mottau has worked as a Business Development Manager for Sunrise Erectors.[ citation needed ] Guitarist Eddie Mottau is his uncle. [7]

Michael Glen Wayne Ryder is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger. Ryder played 12 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, and New Jersey Devils.
Michael Rudolph Knuble is a Canadian-born American former professional ice hockey right winger who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). During his 16 NHL seasons, he played for the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals.
Daniel Denis Boyle is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). Undrafted, Boyle played in the NHL for the Florida Panthers, the Tampa Bay Lightning, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2004, the San Jose Sharks and the New York Rangers.
Simon Gagné is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger. He played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Los Angeles Kings and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). He spent the first ten seasons of his NHL career with the Flyers (1999–2010), followed by one season with Tampa Bay (2010–11) and two with Los Angeles (2011–13), winning the Stanley Cup in 2012, before returning to Philadelphia via trade for the end of the lockout-shortened 2012–13 season. After not playing in 2013–14, Gagné signed with Boston, briefly playing for them before retiring in 2015.
Brian Lee Rolston is an American former professional ice hockey player who most recently played for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). He won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 1995, and the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 playing for the United States. Rolston has represented the U.S. three times in Olympic competition for ice hockey. In the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, he won the silver medal. Rolston was born in Flint, Michigan, but grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has served as head coach of the Little Caesars 2001 hockey club as well as assisting with the Little Caesars 2005 team.
Jay Paul Pandolfo is an American professional ice hockey head coach and former forward. He spent most of his National Hockey League career with the New Jersey Devils before playing the 2011–12 season with the New York Islanders and the 2012–13 season with the Boston Bruins. His younger brother Mike was also once a member of the Devils organization. He currently works as the head coach for the Boston University men's Ice Hockey team.
