Andrew Michael Smith (born 1 October 1967) is a former English cricketer. He was born at Dewsbury in Yorkshire.
Smith was an effective swing bowler for Gloucestershire, [1] and played a single Test for England at Headingley in 1997 against Australia. [2] Graham Thorpe dropped Matthew Elliott at first slip while on 29, [3] for what would have been Smith's first (and only) Test wicket. Elliot went on to make 199 and Australia won comfortably by an innings.
He was never picked to play for England again,but remained one of the most consistent swing bowlers on the county circuit until his retirement in 2003. He later worked as an employment solicitor at Bevan Brittan in Bristol.
Michael Andrew Atherton is a broadcaster,journalist and a former England international cricketer. A right-handed opening batsman for Lancashire and England,and occasional leg-break bowler,he achieved the captaincy of England at the age of 25 and led the side in a record 54 Test matches. Known for his stubborn resistance during an era of hostile fast bowling,Atherton was described in 2001 as a determined defensive opener who made "batting look like trench warfare". Hit wicket is a method of dismissal in the sport of cricket. This method of dismissal is governed by Law 35 of the Laws of Cricket. The striker is out "hit wicket" if,after the bowler has entered his delivery stride and while the ball is in play,his wicket is put down by his bat or his person. The striker may do this whilst preparing to receive or receiving a delivery or in setting off for his first run after playing the delivery. In simple language,if the striking batsman knocks the bails off the stumps or uproots the stumps,while attempting to hit the ball or take off for a run,he is out hit wicket.
