Mike Tompkins (born July 31, 1987) [1] is a Canadian musician from Ilderton, Ontario. He primarily records acapella covers and original songs, using only his mouth and voice. He has been partnered with Maker Studios, but is now an independent artist. [2] He has been featured on both the Today Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show . [3] [4] [5]

Career

Tompkins was born in Edmonton, Alberta, [6] on July 31, 1987. He graduated from the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology. [7] He graduated with a diploma in music production, receiving honours distinction and two awards. [8] He started his musical career on YouTube in 2009. Since then, he has amassed more than 2.4 million subscribers to his channel and over 320 million views on his videos. [9] He has collaborated with artists including Peter Hollens, the cast of Pitch Perfect , Glenn Morrison, Christina Grimmie, Karmin, Bonnie McKee, Tessa Violet, t.A.T.u., [10] Max Schneider, Bethany Mota, and The Muppets. He held 29 concerts in 2014. He has toured Los Angeles 3 times, Pittsburgh 2 times, Bridgeport, Dublin, and Philadelphia once. He has appeared with Lindsey Stirling 13 times, Heffron Drive 9 times, and Kendall Schmidt 2 times. [11]

Personal life

Tompkins has another YouTube channel together with his wife, Kayla Tompkins, and their puppy Jackson and their son titled "Tompkins Life". The couple has one son, Dash Michael Tompkins, born on Mike's birthday. The channel has newly uploaded videos every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. [16] Tompkins has also moved house to Nashville, Tennessee. [17]

t.A.T.u. are a Russian music duo that consists of Lena Katina and Julia Volkova. The singers were part of children's musical group Neposedy before being managed by producer and director Ivan Shapovalov and signing with Russian record label Neformat. t.A.T.u.'s debut album 200 Po Vstrechnoy (2001) was a commercial success in Eastern Europe, and that resulted in the duo signing with Interscope Records to release its English-language counterpart, 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane (2002). The album was certified platinum by the IFPI for one million copies sold in Europe and became the first album by a foreign group to reach number one in Japan. It was written by Sergio Galoyan, Trevor Horn, Martin Kierszenbaum, Valery Polienko and Elena Kiper, while production was by Horn. "All the Things She Said" is a translated and reworked version of their 2000 song "Ya Soshla s Uma", included on their debut album 200 Po Vstrechnoy (2001). It was later included on their compilation albums t.A.T.u. Remixes (2003) and The Best (2006). "The House That Built Me" is a song written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin, and recorded by American country music artist Miranda Lambert. Blake Shelton was originally set to record the song, but when Lambert heard it, she emotionally reacted to the lyrics, and immediately wanted to record it for herself. It was meant to be the third official single from 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane, after "All the Things She Said" and "Not Gonna Get Us", however Interscope Records cancelled it and released "How Soon Is Now?" instead. "Candlelight" is a song by the band The Maccabeats that was released in November 2010. It achieved viral status. The song is a transformation of Mike Tompkins's a cappella cover of the Taio Cruz song "Dynamite" to lyrics about the holiday of Hanukkah. The Maccabeats are an all-male Jewish a cappella student group that formed at Yeshiva University.

The Maccabeats are an American Orthodox Jewish all-male a cappella group. Founded in 2007 at Yeshiva University, Manhattan, New York, the 14-member group specializes in covers and parodies of contemporary hits using Jewish-themed lyrics. Their breakout 2010 Hanukkah music video for "Candlelight", a parody of Mike Tompkins' a cappella music video for Taio Cruz's "Dynamite", logged more than two million hits in its first ten days; the video has been viewed more than 16 million times as of 2022. They have recorded three albums and one EP, and frequently release music videos in conjunction with Jewish holidays. They tour worldwide and have performed at the White House and the Knesset.

Elena Sergeevna Katina, better known as Lena Katina, is a Russian musician who gained fame as one half of the pop/electronica duo t.A.T.u. She started her career at the age of eight, joining the Russian children's act Avenue, soon after that joining Neposedy. In 1999, producer Ivan Shapovalov chose Katina and Julia Volkova for his project t.A.T.u. The duo would later become Russia's most successful pop music act.
