The Minas Gerais Volleyball Championship (Portuguese : Campeonato Mineiro de Voleibol) is the top level men's and women's volleyball competition in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The first edition happened in 1934 and it has been disputed yearly, with some interruptions. The tournament was initially organized by the Minas Gerais Association of General Sports (AMEG) (Portuguese : Associação Mineira de Esportes Gerais). [1] The Minas Gerais Volleyball Federation was founded in 1942, and has organized all editions since then.
The format and number of participating clubs has varied along the years, and differ between the men's and women's tournament. Though the championship concerns to volleyball teams from Minas Gerais, eventually teams from other states have competed. The 2014 edition has four participants on the men's competition [2] [3] and five on the women's competition. [4] The current version is considered to be a preparation event for the Brazilian Men's and Women's Superleagues.

Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, known simply as Cruzeiro, is the largest sports club based in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Although competing in a number of different sports, Cruzeiro is mostly known for its association football team. Its football team is the most prestigious team in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. It plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system, as well as in the Campeonato Mineiro, the state of Minas Gerais's premier state league.

The rivalry between América Futebol Clube and Clube Atlético Mineiro is a footballing rivalry played between Brazilian clubs América Mineiro and Atlético Mineiro, from Belo Horizonte. The clubs first played against each other in 1913, and was for many decades considered the biggest encounter in Minas Gerais. With the fallback suffered by América due to initially refusing to become a professional club and the rise of Cruzeiro, it lost its status as the most important derby in the state, but the rivalry between América and Atlético continued.
