Miriam Khalil is a Canadian-Lebanese opera singer. She is sought after for her interpretation of the works of Golijov, [1] [2] Puccini, [3] and Mozart. [4] She also teaches voice at the University of Alberta. [5]
Miriam Khalil was born in Damascus, Syria, [6] and later emigrated to Ottawa, Canada. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Voice from the University of Ottawa, and further advanced her studies by obtaining an Artist Diploma from the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She went on to participate in training programs, including the Steans Institute for Young Artists at Ravinia and the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme. [7]
Khalil is also a graduate of the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio, a program that cultivates emerging opera talents. [8]
Khalil has continued to expand her repertoire, performing Leila in The Pearl Fishers [9] with Vancouver Opera, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, [10] and Sabine in Mary Kouyoumdjia and Royce Vavrek's opera Adoration at the Prototype Festival in New York. [11] Her performances are characterized by a deep emotional connection to the material and a rich, versatile voice.
Khalil's career highlights also include her celebrated interpretation of Osvaldo Golijov’s Ayre, a song cycle that she has performed to critical acclaim across North and South America, including a debut at the Kirchner Cultural Centre in Buenos Aires. The album Ayre: Live earned her a Juno Award nomination for Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral. [12] [13]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalil transitioned to digital platforms, participating in virtual productions such as Against the Grain Theatre's Messiah/Complex, a multilingual adaptation of Handel’s Messiah that was widely praised and led to her second Juno Award nomination. [14] She also directed a film adaptation of Holst’s Sāvitri (a chamber opera) [15] and created an online Arabic recital titled Songs My Parents Taught Me as part of Pacific Opera Victoria's ‘For All to Hear’ series. Khalil has been the recipient of multiple awards and grants from esteemed organizations such as the George London Foundation, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition Scholarships. [24]

Kathleen Deanna Battle is an American operatic soprano known for her distinctive vocal range and tone. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Battle initially became known for her work within the concert repertoire through performances with major orchestras during the early and mid-1970s. She made her opera debut in 1975. Battle expanded her repertoire into lyric soprano and coloratura soprano roles during the 1980s and early 1990s, until her eventual dismissal from the Metropolitan Opera in 1994. She later has focused on recording and the concert stage. After a 22-year absence from the Met, Battle performed a concert of spirituals at the Metropolitan Opera House in November 2016, and again in May 2024.
Dawn Upshaw is an American soprano. She is the recipient of several Grammy Awards and has released a number of Edison Award-winning discs; she performs both opera and art song, and her repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary. Many composers, including Henri Dutilleux, Osvaldo Golijov, John Harbison, Esa-Pekka Salonen, John Adams, and Kaija Saariaho, have written for her. In 2007, she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.

Christina Petrowska Quilico is a Canadian pianist. She is a professor emerita, senior scholar at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2020 "For her celebrated career as a classical and contemporary pianist and for championing Canadian music." In 2021, she was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2022, she was appointed to the Order of Ontario for having "opened the ears of music lovers internationally through numerous classical and contemporary performances.... As a Professor of Musicology and Piano at York University, she has received esteemed research awards. As a benefactor, she established The Christina and Louis Quilico Award at the Ontario Arts Foundation and the Canadian Opera Company." She was presented with the Ontario Arts Council's Oskar Morawetz Award for Excellence in Music Performance, "recognizing talent and commitment to Canadian music", in October 2023.
Brott Music Festival presents annual classical, opera, jazz, pops, and children's education concerts in Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions in Ontario, Canada as well as touring to other music festivals in southern Ontario. The festival was founded by late conductor Boris Brott and has grown into Ontario's only and Canada's largest orchestral music festival. The orchestra in residence is the National Academy Orchestra of Canada, Canada's only professional orchestral training program. It is also home to BrottOpera, a training program for Canadian emerging opera singers. Its current artistic director is Tania Miller.
