Mirwais Azizi (born 1962) is a Dubai-based Afghan businessman. [1] [2] [3] He is the chairman of Azizi Group of companies, which he founded in 1989 with a presence in realty, banking, investment, and hospitality. [4] He is also the chairman of Azizi Bank, [5] [6] which he established in 2006 in Kabul, Afghanistan, with $7.5 million in equity capital and has since reached up to $80 million. [7]

Azizi is currently building the second tallest tower in Dubai. [8] He was featured in the list of "Arabian Business 100 Inspiring leaders in the Middle East" in March 2018. [9] [10]

He is regarded by many Afghans as Afghanistan's richest man, who handled as much as 70% of the petroleum products sold in Afghanistan, reportedly by Asia Sentinel . [11]

Early life and education

He was born in Laghman, Afghanistan, He graduated in law from the University of Kabul. [12] He left Afghanistan in 1988. [13] [14]

Career

In 2007, Mirwais Azizi established Azizi Developments. [3] A year before that he founded Azizi Bank, which became one of the largest commercial financial institutions in Afghanistan. [5] He also acquired Bakhtar Bank (now Islamic Bank of Afghanistan) [15] which is one of the fastest growing banks in Afghanistan. [10]

Azizi Developments started selling off-plan properties in Dubai until the 2007–2008 financial crisis. The majority of buyers could not continue payments and Azizi instructed that their deposits be handed back. [16]

In 2013, Azizi Developments resumed the construction of projects. [17] Presently, the company has more than 200 projects under various stages of development with a current portfolio in Dubai valued over AED 45 billion. [18] The Azizi Hotak Group, which he started with an initial investment of $80 million, operates in 10 countries. [13]

He has served on the board of trustees for American University of Afghanistan, the first non-profit higher education institution in Afghanistan. [10] [12]

Personal life

He is married to Parigul, with whom he has 7 children, including Farhad Azizi, Fawad Azizi, and Jawad Azizi. [12] On 30 October 2024, Mirwais Azizi confirmed that his daughter Farishta Azizi passed away at the age of 32, after a long battle with cancer on his Twitter account.

The carrier is headquartered in Shāre Naw district, Kabul. Ariana Afghan Airlines has been on the list of air carriers banned in the European Union since October 2006.

Emaar Properties is an Emirati real estate development company located in the United Arab Emirates. The two largest shareholders are Dubai ruler Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the UAE's sovereign wealth fund Investment Corporation of Dubai.

Environmental issues in Afghanistan are monitored by the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA). They predate the political turmoil of the past few decades. Forests have been depleted by centuries of grazing and farming, practices which have only increased with modern population growth.

Azizi Bank is one of the largest commercial banks in Afghanistan. It has 56 branches including extension counters and around 88 automated teller machines across Afghanistan. The bank opened on June 13, 2006, and is headquartered in the Wazir Akbar Khan neighborhood of Kabul, Afghanistan. Mirwais Azizi is the founder and chairman of the bank.

Khost International Airport, formerly known as Khost Airport, is located in the eastern section of Khost, which is the capital of Khost Province in Afghanistan. The airport is under the country's Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, and is used for domestic and international flights. The Ministry of Defense also uses it for emergency relief purposes such as when the June 2022 Afghanistan earthquake occurred.

After the return of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) in 2021, there was a concern that the mass media will significantly decrease in the country. The number of digital media outlets is steadily increasing with the help of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, and other such online platforms. IEA's spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid suggested that the media should be in line with Sharia and national interests.

Energy in Afghanistan is provided by hydropower followed by fossil fuel and solar power. Currently, less than 50% of Afghanistan's population has access to electricity. This covers the major cities in the country. Many rural areas do not have access to adequate electricity but this should change after the major CASA-1000 project is completed.

He has been Afghanistan's Ambassador to the Netherlands from 2017 to 2020 and currently the Afghan ambassador to France since 2020.

Mullah Neda Mohammad Nadeem is a politician in Afghanistan and a member of the Taliban. He is serving as the acting Minister of Higher Education since October 2022. Previously, he held a position as Police Chief of the Nangarhar province since September 2021. Nadeem also served as Governor of Nangarhar province from August 2021 to 20 September 2021 and was replaced by Daud Muzamil.

Animal husbandry in Afghanistan is a traditional way of life, which exists in all 34 provinces of the country, and plays an important role in the nation's economy. The livestock in Afghanistan mainly include sheep, cattle, and goats. All of these produce red meat and dairy products for local consumption. Weddings, zakats and the annual Eid al-Adha boost the sale of these animals. As a totally Islamic country, pig farming and consumption of pork are simply nonexistent. The wool of the slaughtered sheep is used to make Afghan rugs, clothing, and other products.
