Miss Malaya 1954, was held on 28 June 1954 at the Capitol Theatre, Singapore. 21 candidates from across Malaya and Singapore and 3 candidates from Sarawak participated in this year's competition. [1] Most of the candidates were nominated by various organisations such as Qantas Boac, Fortune Advertising Ltd., Robinson and Co. Ltd., Malayan Airways, Shewan Tomes and more but individual entries were also welcomed to compete in the pageant. The prizes of the pageant were a free trip to America, a trip to Hong Kong, and a trip either to Penang or Singapore. [2] [3] [4]

Marjorie Wee, a 21-year-old air hostess represented Malayan Airways won the title at the end of the event. [5] [6] Wee was supposed to debut in Miss Universe 1954 as Miss Malaya but due to several reasons she had to represent Singapore instead in the pageant held in Long Beach, California, United States. [7] [8] [9]

The Malaysia Agreement or the Agreement relating to Malaysia between United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Federation of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore (MA63) was the agreement which combined North Borneo, Sarawak, and Singapore with the existing states of the Federation of Malaya, the resulting union being named Malaysia. Singapore was later expelled from Malaysia, becoming an independent state on 9 August 1965.

Chew Swee Kee was a Singaporean politician. A member of the political party, the Labour Front, Chew served as Minister of Education from 1955 to 1959.

Sir Han Hoe Lim, CBE, JP, was a Singaporean physician and politician. Lim was appointed an unofficial member of the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements in 1933, becoming the Council's senior Chinese unofficial member the next year, and was concurrently appointed an unofficial member of the Executive Council in 1940. Violet Maria Bombell (née Sleigh), became Miss Malaya when she was crowned "Miss Max Factor of Malaya" in 1953. She also won the second place in the Miss Malaya 1954 pageant in Singapore.

Miss World Malaysia is the national beauty pageant held in Malaysia. The winner represents the country at Miss World while the other titleholders will compete at Miss Supranational and Miss Grand International pageants. On occasion, when the winner does not qualify, a runner-up is sent.

Miss Singapore 1958, the first edition of Miss Universe Singapore pageant was held on 27 June 1958 at the Capitol Theatre, Singapore. Out of 32 applicants, it was then cut down to only 14 contestants to compete for the crown and title. A 19-year-old stenographer Marion Faulkner Willis won the title at the end of the event. She then had the rights to represent Singapore in the Miss Universe 1958 pageant in Long Beach, California, United States. She became the second woman to represent Singapore in the Miss Universe pageant after Marjorie Wee, of Malaya in 1954.

T. T. Rajah Singaporean politician and lawyer

Thampore Thamby Rajah, better known as T. T. Rajah, was a Singaporean politician and lawyer. He was a founding member of the People's Action Party and briefly became its second secretary-general in August 1957. He resigned the post in September 1957 and later joined the Barisan Sosialis in 1961.

Miss Malaysia 1963, the 1st edition of the Miss World Malaysia pageant was held on 23 April 1963, at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur. 30 candidates from all across Federation, Singapore and Borneo were expected to compete but only 11 candidates were chosen to compete in the grand finale vying for the crown and title.
