Missing Man Formation was a band put together by former Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick, featuring Welnick and an ever-changing group of musicians, including Scott Mathews and Steve Kimock on guitar (eventually replaced by John Wedemeyer, Terry Haggerty and Mark Holzinger), Prairie Prince on drums (eventually replaced by Trey Sabatelli), Bobby Vega on bass (eventually replaced by Robin Sylvester) and others, most notably, Bobby Strickland (reeds and flute). History

The band performed primarily between 1996 and 2000, mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area, often at the Fillmore Auditorium, and generally for two sets lasting two hours or more; or at music festivals, where they played shorter sets. [4] Guest performers included artists such as Scott Mathews, Todd Rundgren, Michelle Rundgren, Scott Black, Annie Simpson and Diana Mangano. [4] The band was managed by Stephanie Kesey.

Studio work

Their first and only album, Missing Man Formation , was released in 1998. It includes a version of "Samba in the Rain", written for the Dead by Welnick and Robert Hunter, another Welnick/Hunter song "Golden Stairs", and "Devil I Know", by Welnick with John Perry Barlow and Bob Bralove.

Live performances

During performances, the band generally played, in addition to the material on that album, songs written by (or for, or popularized by) the Grateful Dead (e.g., "The Wheel", "Stella Blue", "Scarlet Begonias", "Standing On The Moon", "Not Fade Away", "Long Way To Go Home") The Beatles (e.g., "Helter Skelter", "All You Need Is Love"), Bob Dylan (e.g., "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", and songs written by other well-known rock and roll bands (e.g., "Kashmir", by Led Zeppelin, "Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke, "You Can't Always Get What You Want", by the Rolling Stones and "Godzilla", by Blue Öyster Cult). Steve Kimock American rock guitarist (born 1955)

Steve Kimock is an American rock guitarist who has spent most of his life around San Francisco. He was a member of Bay Area bands Zero and KVHW. His tone and some of his playing approach has been compared to Jerry Garcia, who was a friend of his, and he has been affiliated with musicians connected to the Grateful Dead, including the bands the Other Ones, RatDog, and Phil Lesh & Friends. Garcia cited Kimock, along with Frank Gambale and Michael Hedges, as his favorite guitar players during the later part of his life.

Bob Bralove is a keyboard–synthesizer player who worked as a sound technician with the Grateful Dead from 1986 to 1995. Throughout his tenure, he performed as an auxiliary musician throughout "Drums" and "Space", the band's signature aleatoric music segments. Accordingly, he played a key role in their integration of MIDI technology, first working with drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, keyboardist Brent Mydland, and later guitarist Bob Weir and synthesizer/piano player Vince Welnick. He also co-wrote several songs with Weir and Welnick, including "Picasso Moon" on Built to Last (1989) and "Way to Go Home" and "Easy Answers", which were slated to appear on the band's unfinished fourteenth studio album. Perhaps his most significant project with the band was curating excerpts from "Drums" and "Space" on Infrared Roses, a 1991 compilation album. "Parallelogram" and "Little Nemo in Nightland" are some of his most notable "compositions" from this release.

The Grateful Dead had worked on songs in the early 1990s for an album that was intended to be the follow-up to Built to Last (1989), but it was never completed. This has sometimes been referred to as the unfinished last Grateful Dead album and The Missing Album. The band began work on a new album in February 1992, which was incomplete. After Jerry Garcia's death, the band had considered finishing the album, but it never came into fruition.
