Mission Bay Yacht Club (MBYC) is a private yacht club in San Diego, California, on the west side of Mission Bay. [1] [2]

Contents

The club hosted the Snipe World Championships in 1997 and the club's Snipe fleet won the Commodore Hub E. Isaacks Trophy in 1969, 1971 and 1981.

Shelter Island is a neighborhood of Point Loma in San Diego, California, United States. It is actually not an island but is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. It was originally a sandbank in San Diego Bay, visible only at low tide. It was built up into dry land using material dredged from the bay in 1934. It was developed in the 1950s and contains hotels, restaurants, marinas, and public parkland.

The Naples Sabot is an 8-foot (2.4 m) sailing dinghy. The Naples Sabot was designed by Roy McCullough and R.A. Violette and the first two were built in Violette's garage during WW II, although official designs were not made available until 1946. The Naples Sabot is based on the Balboa Dinghy and on Charles MacGregor's Sabot as published in Rudder magazine, April 1939. David Ullman is an international yachtsman, sailboat racer, and sailmaker. Ullman founded Ullman Sails in Newport Beach, California in 1967.

Caleb Payne is an American sailor. He represented his country at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Paine started sailing at age 6 in the dingy favored by Southern California yacht clubs called a Naples Sabot at Mission Bay Yacht Club. He later transferred to Southwestern Yacht Club and started sailing in the Laser class of sailboat in national competition. He attended Point Loma High School in San Diego and sailed on their sailing team. Forgoing college, Paine began his Olympic campaign in earnest in the Finn class as his size demanded. He began traveling the world to compete, raising money any way he could to stay in competition. He worked closely with silver medalist and fellow American Zach Railey as his training partner leading up to the 2012 Olympics in London where Railey competed. He continued to train and develop his equipment and skills leading up to the 2016 Games in Rio. A very hard-fought battle with former training partner Railey resulted in Paine's earning the right to sail in Rio. The racing in Rio was equally challenging both off the water and on but Paine secured the Bronze Medal in the final medal race by posting a dominant win. For winning the Bronze Medal in the Rio Olympics Paine also was awarded the title of US Sailor of the Year.
