Mississippi Rollergirls is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Gautier, Mississippi. Founded in 2006, the league consists of a single team, which competes against teams from other leagues. Mississippi Rollergirls is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). [1]

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating counter-clockwise around a track. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly inside the United States.

Gautier, Mississippi City in Mississippi, United States

Gautier is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States, along the Gulf of Mexico west of Pascagoula. It is part of the Pascagoula Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 18,572 at the 2010 census, up from 11,681 at the 2000 census. In 2002, Gautier had annexed land more than doubling its area.

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is the international governing body for the sport of women's flat track roller derby, and association of leagues around the world. The organization was founded in April 2004 as the United Leagues Coalition (ULC), but was renamed in November 2005. It is registered in Raleigh, North Carolina as a 501(c)(6) business league organization, a type of nonprofit organization.

History

The league was founded in 2006, and describes itself as having been the first flat track women's roller derby league in Mississippi. [2] It was bouting before the end of the following year. [3]

Mississippi is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. Mississippi is the 32nd most extensive and 34th most populous of the 50 United States. It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Alabama to the east, the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana to the south, and Arkansas and Louisiana to the west. The state's western boundary is largely defined by the Mississippi River. Jackson, with a population of approximately 167,000 people, is both the state's capital and largest city.

In October 2011, the league was accepted as an apprentice member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, [4] and it graduated to full membership in December 2012. [5] It was reported in April 2017 that the league was struggling with attrition due to injuries and life changes among its members. [6]
